How we MAXIMIZE opportunities for students: Teachers can maximize opportunities for students by giving them time to engage with new material on their own first. An effective teacher may or may not step in or probe when needed, but what he/she does not do is give them a problem telling his/her students, "do as I do." Formulas and algorithms will not stick without understanding why one is getting a correct answer. Effective teachers understand that new ideas are connected to prior knowledge, and they afford their students the opportunity to use strategies and representations of their choice.
