Build a Rain Barrel

We have an area in our driveway (next to our garage) that regularly washes out in heavy rain. This run off enters directly into an unnamed creek, eventually flowing into the Juniata River. I am going to work with my family to build a rain barrel for the side of the garage to catch some of that run off. I will use that water in my garden.

One way to reduce runoff into the bay is to create a rain garden. This is a garden that is imbedded six inches into the ground and is designed to collect and absorb water in 24-48 hours.
https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/water/rainscapes/about.html#raingarden

Writing to an apartment complex/HOA and encouraging permeable pavement, pet waste cleanup systems, and native plants/raised bed gardens on the property can potentially reduce the impact that families living in multi-unit homes have on stormwater, especially in dense, older urban cities with Combined Sewage Systems

Storm Drain Stenciling

I know this is not always a popular idea as some do not think there is a lot of actual action happening but I would be happy with small steps...including those steps that could lead to awareness and thoughtfulness that could, potentially lead to more action in the future. I propose that my students living in town investigate the streets, allies, sidewalks, and storm drains near their homes. (With permission and taking all precautions, of course!) I would like them to investigate where that storm drain leads to....to the Susquehanna River!!! (Our town is on its banks.) I'd like to have them mark their drains, saying that their drain leads to the river. I think this would be a great step to help our community gain awareness and hopefully start to make better choices.

https://www.cbf.org/join-us/education-program/resources/storm-drain-stenciling.html

Have students develop plans to help assist with runoff at the school grounds. Students could create a rain garden, which there was one formerly made on campus. The upkeep did not happen, so students who venture into this project will have a basis to begin. The rain garden will help keep the Muddy Branch stream. They could also develop other solutions that can assist in decreasing runoff.

I would love to see a "grassroots" movement to convince local landowners to convert 10% (or more) of their manicured lawns into more natural areas with native plants, less mowing, & less chemicals needed to maintain it. This would both increase biodiversity, and also slow storm water runoff.
