We don't create a culture of empathy, of recognition. The daily journal could be a space where the student feels safe to share some of these daily violations of his being, but instead it's an empty exercise for him. In class after class he is irrelevant to the teacher, and the material is irrelevant to him. But he still wants to express himself as evidenced by this writing he's done (where? in what context?).
