To know the origins of Labor Day, we must go back to the year 1886, in the United States. At that time, workers had begun a fight to achieve an 8-hour workday. The philosophy was: 8 hours to work, 8 to sleep and 8 to the house.

Until then, the only limitation in some states was the prohibition of not doing work for a person more than 18 hours in a row without just cause. The fine for doing so was $25.

The existence of the 'mona' understood as a true Easter meal is documented at least since the 15th century, although it is suspected that it dates back to the oldest. The shape and composition of this cake, which tradition dictates that the godfathers should give their fillols to that date, has changed a lot over time. It seems that in the past, when done at home, it was shaped like a tortilla and was made with bread dough, possibly a bit more tasty and enriched. Until the end of the twentieth century, hard-boiled eggs were painted with the shell, one for each year of the child to whom it was delivered.
In Catalunya, we celebrate "La Mona" every monday after Easter.

ALL SAINTS - 1st NOVEMBER

All Saints – Tots Sants in Catalan – is Autumn's most eagerly awaited festival. At this time it is the custom for people to take flowers to the cemetery for family members who have passed away, eat castanyes, chestnuts, and make panellets – little marzipan cakes. Another tradition in some places involves putting on theatrical performances. Specifically, All Saints Day itself, 1st November, is the time for eating chestnuts and panellets. The next day, 2nd November, known as All Souls Day, is when journeys are made to visit the dead in the cemeteries and the theatrical performances take place.

All Saints is a time when it begins to be colder and the days get shorter. Summer has passed and nature appears to be entering a period of death. So it isn't strange that, since time immemorial, many cultures have established a day for remembering the dead around this date.

The Diada de Catalunya is celebrated every 11th of September and it celebrates the fall of Barcelona against the Bourbon troops during the War of the Spanish Succession that same day of 1714.

On the Diada de Catalunya, there are floral offerings in the monuments of Rafael Casanova and Josep Moragues and in the Fossar de les Moreres. There are also protests and concerts and the anthem of Catalonia, Els Segadors is sung.

Parliament declared the national holiday of Catalonia in 1980, but the first commemoration dates back to 1886 although there were problems and it didn’t become popular until 1901. In the celebration of 1923 there was an intervention of the police that caused many wounded and arrested people and only 2 days later won the coup of State of Primo de Rivera, so the celebration was prohibited. With the Second Spanish Republic the 11th of September was celebrated again, but during the Franco dictatorship it was banned again. Finally it was celebrated again in 1976, when Franco died, but in Sant Boi de Llobregat that is where the tomb of Rafael Casanova is located since in the Franco dictatorship his statue in Barcelona had been removed. They replaced the statue and in 1977 it was again celebrated in Barcelona.

CHRISTMAS

Most people in Spain go to Midnight Mass or 'La Misa Del Gallo' (The Mass of the Rooster). It is called this because a rooster is supposed to have crowed the night that Jesus was born. Christmas Eve is known as Nochebuena. In the days before Nochebuena, children might take part in 'piden el aguinaldo' where they go and sing carols around their neighboUrs hoping to get some money!

Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before the service. The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner was 'Pavo Trufado de Navidad' which is Turkey stuffed with truffles or 'Pularda asada' , although they are not commonly eaten now.

Popular deserts and sweets include 'mazapán' (made of almonds, sugar and eggs), 'turrón' (made of honey and toasted almonds) and 'polvorones' (made of flour, butter and sugar).

An unusual figure which is popular and traditional in Pesebres in Catalonia is 'El Caganer' which means 'the poo-er'! And yes, it's a figure of a person going to the toilet! It's normally a figure of a Catalan peasant, wearing the traditional red Catalan cap (called a barretina) squatting with their trousers/pants down and well, you know... New versions of El Caganer are now produced each year, often with the faces of celebrities and politicians! This figure has been part of nativity scenes in Catalonia since the early 18th century. It's often hidden in a back corner of the Pesebre, well away from the stable! Similar figures can also sometimes be found in scenes in other areas in Spain.

A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen conifer such as a spruce, pine or fir, or an artificial tree of similar appearance, associated with the celebration of Christmas, originating in Northern Europe. We decorate it with balls, lights and a star at the top of the tree.
