The Persian military was based off of cavalry, most soldiers

being horse archers, while in the later empire, various soldiers

from different Satrapies and different fighting styles, bringing

a little bit of everything to the field. The Persian empire was divided

into regions known as Satrapies enabling the Persians to easily organize and

consolidate the vast territories they occupied. The development of large systems

of roads eased communication, enabling Emperors to control their realm more

directly.

The decline of Persia was due to multiple problems within its society and external turmoil. Political problems like corrupt satraps and slow communication caused an eventual decline in their economy. Heavy taxes caused revolts and rebellions in provinces, greatly weakening the empire internally. Their kings arrogantly left the side of the empire facing central Asia vulnerable to nomadic attack, since they were scarcely guarded. Eventually Alexander the Great invaded the Persians under the motive of revenge for their invasion of the Greeks over a century before. Persian forces under Darius III were defeated by Alexander and he pushed through the empire with little resistance. Alexander would conquer Persia, however he adopted parts of the culture and the used the political framework of Persia in his own empire.

Persia's religion was called Zoroastrianism. This religion benefited Persia in many ways. Zoroastrianism was one of the first monotheistic religions. Many religions that were created after Zoroastrianism were monotheistic. Also, the religion encouraged good behavior from its practitioners. The citizens of the nations conquered by Persia were converted to Zoroastrianism. Zoroastrianism outlawed slavery, and spread of this religion created equality. Zoroastrianism was beneficial to Persia and the nations conquered by Persia.

Cyrus was the first person to unite the individual persian tribes into one joined empire. Cyrus eventually captured all of Anatolia and the Greek city states of Ionia. He also took over all of Babylonia when his army marched to the city the gates were thrown open. After he lost his life Cyrus' son Cambyses took the throne. Cambyses took over all of Egypt. The successor to Cambyses was Darius I. Under his reign the empire expanded eastward all the way to the indus Valley Civilization and north into a little of Europe. Darius I also completed the canal linking the red sea and the nile river. As a result of the empire being so massive, the persians had satraps (governors) to control parts of the civilization. having governors was so important because it prevented the break up of the empire for many years. The building of roads connected the provinces to the heart of the kingdom so that trade could better flow throughout the empire. The invention of the paradayadam, oasis in the desert built by man, gave the king power to build these things in exchange for something he wanted.
