In response to prompt 1 thoughts that I did not originally thin -grenouille hasn't harbored any animosity against society until these chapters (wreaking of humans, packed with people, smell of humans in general) - I believe he didnt agree with/ disliked humans from childhood

Carolina brought up an interesting point about Grenouille's isolation, and how that choice to isolate him narratively, brings him further away from society and characterizes him as less human. With this thought, she closed the discussion of these two prompts with an eloquent recounting of the discussed shift of the purpose of scent in the text. She was very clear in bringing up all perspectives brought up in the discussion, and addressing the overarching theme of Grenouille's relationship with scent and in part with that, his relationship with humanity.

I agree with your comment that Sanjeev is less able to compromise because of his imbalances in his life and his physical state. He did not expect for marriage to be as difficult as it was and he has trouble dealing with all his emotions. His discomfort and guilt after seeing Twinkle cry indicates that he is starting to reconsider his stances and works towards the development of compromise in his marriage. I also think he has guilt after trying to control their relationship and his physical state almost is a moment of realization for him.

Good points about the analysis of the relationship between Sanjeev and Twinkle. I definitely agree that Sanjeev was not very compromising in their relationship unlike Twinkle was. I think it is interesting how she brought up the fact that Sanjeev only compromised when Twinkle wasn't judged by their guests. Sanjeev was only comfortable and accepting of Twinkles odd interest in the religious objects when Sanjeev knew that they wouldn't be judged by their peers. I never thought of that.

I liked how you said that the statue respresents a new beginning for her and her husband and that is why she feels so connected to it. It was also interesting how you spoke about Sanjeev's inability to compromise for the second question. I didn't originally think about that being the cause of his physical ailments.

I agree with Claudia's argument that his physical problems make him more ignorant of Twinkle's feelings and that these physical problems also affect his attitude toward compromising the objects Twinkle finds, leading him to be frustrated and upset. His physical state manifests in his mental state which in turn, increases the conflicts between him and Twinkle, leaving rough patches in their relationship.

I loved how you talked about the objectification of women in marriage, and how you talked about how Sanjeev was seeing Twinkle as an accessory and not a person- when she didn't mold into the exact accessory he wanted he was upset. He wanted someone he could fashion in his own vision. I also loved the discussion regarding the irony of the Virgin Mary statue, which represents the ideal vision of men looking for a wife who is pure and open to influence, whereas Twinkle is very confident in her and in a way is a foil of the Virgin Mary

I understood differently what Aliya and Constanza said. I understood his physical pain as a consequence of dominating the marriage. He can control it by getting rid of the Christian symbols and forcing his wife to ‘‘behave’’ and just follow their religion. However, the physical pain shows how in reality he feels guilty doing it. So Lahiri not only focused on breaking stereotypes for women, showing how Twinkle doesn’t listen to his husband but also on how men can feel emotions toward their wives and what they do to them.

I also saw the physical pain as a representation of his inner struggle in a situation where he feels that there is no solution. If he removes the statue, he will harm his wife emotionally, but if he leaves it he will feel ‘‘unloyal’’ to his religion and he will feel judged. The physical pain after attempting to solve any of these things emphasizes this idea.

I agree with Naomi that Bibi's treatment depends a lot on the women because she is expected to find a husband. She talked about how people were unwilling to support her. I really like what she said about the use of "we" in order to show how often most people would fall into that category of sympathizing but not fully putting that into action.

I enjoyed all of Sarah's points. She was well said about how society doesn't fully embrace Bibi and her disability and struggle. She is seen as an outcast and is not heard for wanting normal things that people in her community have, like a husband. I agree with how she said that the people around her don't feel a need to listen and hear her because they don't see her as part of society.

I like the way Kate was able to combine Oliver and Samara's perspectives on the way society treated Bibi. On one hand, Bibi's community did want to help her, however, their motives may not be 100% honorable and pure. The two aren't mutually exclusive--it is totally possible that people who genuinely want to help Bibi also had selfish motivations. It is only natural for people to want to conform, and Bibi's community's motivations do not negate the impact their actions had on her life.

I like how you mentioned how the society in this story is not truly sympathetic to Bibi Haldar because she doesn't fit into society norms with her "incurable" treatment. The people in the community do not feel the need to understand or care for Bibi on a deeper level, and along with her lack of family support and the loss of her father, this isolated Bibi and left her outcasted by society. Also, I agree that the women in society did not interfere with Bibi's situation until later in the story and did not actively help in supporting her, but rather followed along with the group in a way that was convenient and not too involving for them.

I think you did a very good job touching on the subtleties and actions of the individual characters that contribute towards the relationship dynamic when answering especially the second question. I think for the first question you could connect the responses back to the Virgin Mary Statue for example just to keep the discussion relevant to the question.

I like your mention of the way the statue showcases the differences between Sanjeev and Twinkle's personalities. I agree that Sanjeev is more of a realist than Twinkle, but I also think this should be more connected to the statue!

I also like how you brought up the end of the story and asked whether everyone else thinks their relationship should continue. I think the relationship will likely continue as a result of the traditional values held by their families. But I also want to ask whether you think it's a good idea for their relationship to continue, or whether, regardless of whether they do or not, they should end their relationship.

I agree with the difference that Naomi mentioned, where Bibi finds her place in society, being now a mother while Boori Ma is just kicked and nothing more is known. She also said that Boori Ma’s end is less conclusive, which I found very interesting because it can make the reader think that there’s the possibility that Boori Ma found her place in society later.

I think you hit a lot of really good points, especially about the different roles of Boori Ma and Bibi and how they're similar because they share feelings of isolation and marginalization. I also found really interesting your point about how both of them are completely dependent on their communities and can't really do anything about how people treat them for being "inferior" individuals because their communities take care of them, and no other individuals will be willing to help them because they did not really contribute anything to society and are considered "useless". Overall, your analysis of the questions, specifically the second one, was very detailed and this proves that you really understood what the story was about.

I agree with her point surrounding whether or not the actions of the community were sincere or not I also find myself in an in-between on their actions not being completely hollow but lacking some sincerity. Adding to what Jessa said about the shift in the narrator's perception of his duty to protect his wife, I also saw another theme when the woman was attacked. I interpreted it as the narrator’s culture being attacked. The fact that he didn’t help made me think about his disconnection to his old culture.
