It's visiting day for a little girl and her grandma, who are going to see the girl's father, her grandmother's son. From a first-person perspective, this story illustrates the thoughts and observations of the daughter of an incarcerated father, who gets to see him one day per month. From offering to take gifts to a neighbor's son at the prison, to sharing home made food with other passengers on the bus on the way there, Visiting Day add's a community perspective to an unfortunately familiar story of visiting incarcerated loved ones.

Touching on joy, sorrow, fear, anger, pride, peace, compassion, hope, and finally love, this picture book lightly shows the complex experience of Black children today, all while centering a hopeful and optimistic future.

While many stories of incarcerated parents focus on the positive relationships between parent and child, Hazelnut Days includes a difficult but vital acknowledgment of people as complicated beings. While the young boy describes knowing his father and him "belong together" and wanting to one day race to "see who's the fastest," he is also observant of his father's anger and the unhealthy relationship between him and his mother. Less of an optimistic read, this story carefully narrates the important reality of many family dynamics as difficult and multifaceted.
