It means having my Latinidad to connect with others, allowing us to build relationships and has helped guide us through decades of marginalization and historial exclusion but that makes us unique because our cultures within our Latinidad represent years of beautiful ancestry and traditions, each with a story of their own. Latinidad in the US is still unfolding. It means we have to work still break down the idea that Latinos are a monotheistic group. We can come in many colors and shades. Learning language, learning / assimilating to US culture plus merging Mexican culture. Looking back @ childhood and comparing it to my current life I realized that families do not know how important higher education can impact their children’s lives. I went to neighborhood schools all my life. Not until college I realized that my vocabulary is not up to par … a reason why I’m shy to publicly speak. I was not on the same critical thinking  level as my classmates. My family moved to apartments that were cheap because that is all they could afford and thus meaning that I grew up in lower socio economic communities. Spending much of my time alone … school was absolutely a safe haven … 

If we are not hooked up with supportive/ growing opportunities for youth and young adults we continue these cycles “ignorance is bliss” mentality … I know I could have easily been a teen mom but my teachers and parents made sacrifices. Being a Latino in America means sacrifices and putting forth the effort of conscious decisions making for my future generations

To me latinifad in the United States means having a shared experience that derives from a similar culture. The important detail, however, is being Latino in the US. Given American policy, and culture this added experience creates a shared connection that words cannot not describe. Latinidad is diverse and in it we find unity as different as we are. Latindad is a diaspora, it is languages, it is small nuances that two people from different latino backgrounds can look at each other and identify with in their own ways. Latinidad is Black Lives, Afro-Latinos and Indigenous communities, it is immigration stories, it is family, it is religion and all its complexities, Latinidad even comes with colorism, racism, sexism and homophobia. Latinidad are the people in this country who live in the shadows as “undocumented” with limited rights and who are yet a crucial part of the economic engine of this country. Latinidad are the memes that we can identify with and the images of concentration camps at the border that bring us sadness. We live very different latino experiences and yet find ourselves under this same nation that promised so much yet has delivered so little to people like us.
