Irony

Sheriff Peters and County Attorney, George Henderson, pride themselves on their powers of detection and logical reasoning. But it is the two women, Mrs.Peters and Mrs.Hale, who discover the clues and establish a motive amid seemingly harmless items in the Wright home. The story ends with an ironic between Henderson and Mrs.Hale :

COUNTY ATTORNEY (facetiously). Well, Henry, at least we found out that she was not going to -------- what is it you call it, ladies?

MRS.HALE (her hand against her pocket). We call it ------- knot it, Mr.Henderson.

Symbolism

1) Bird : Mr. Wright's spirit

2) Cage : John Wright's oppression of his wife and her spirit

3) Stove, Cold House and Broken Jars : When the stove fire goes out, the house temperature drops below freezing point and all but one of the preserve jars break. The stove fire appears to represent John and Minnie Wright's marriage. The fire probably goes out just before or immediately after the murder. The resulting temperatures crack the jars of preserves, apparently representing Minnie's mental being. That jar that remains intact seems to symbolize the modicum of sanity left to her and the hope for a brighter future that Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters envision for her.

4) Unevenly Sewn Quilt Block : Mrs. Wright's disturbed mental condition.

5) Rope: Minnie Wright's unsurpation of male power. Strangulation is a man's method of killing . In her rebellion against her domineering husband, Minnie musters the strength to murder like a man, thus perversely asserting her quality.

Egeus has come to Theseus to complain about Hermia because Egeus wants Theseus to use his power as a duke of Athens to convict Hermia if she refuses to marry Demetrius. Egeus thinks that through Theseus, he could restrain Hermia from going against him by threathening her to become a nun or be sentenced to death. (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 22-25)

Quote Identification

1.      Hyppolyta, I woo’d thee with my sword,

This quote was spoken by Theseus to Hyppolyta. He had successfully taken away Amazon from her after winning the battle. Thus, he wanted to marry her in a joyful and festive ceremony.

 

2.      The course of true love never did run smooth.

This quote was spoken by Lysander towards Hermia. What he meant by this is that true love will face a lot of obstacles and challenges. But at the end, true love will always unite.

 

3.      I will roar you as gently as any sucking dove; I will roar you, as twere any nightingale.

This quote was spoken by Bottom to Peter Quince. Quince wanted Snug to play as the lion but Bottom insisted to take the part because he thought that he could the most gentle and sweetest lion. Bottom uses “aggravate” thinking that it means quite or moderate but actually it is the other way around indicating that he is narcissist. 

 

 

When Oberon asked Titania for the Indian child, she straight away gave the boy to him without any question or resistance because she was too taken up with Bottom. She was too in love with a Bottom to care about other people or thing at the moment. This shows the strength of the love potion as a power to make one falls in love with another despite their prior emotions and also symbolises the irrational nature of love.
