Literary devices in Trifles

Literary Devices

Irony

Sheriff Peters and County Attorney, George Henderson, pride themselves on their powers of detection and logical reasoning. But it is the two women, Mrs.Peters and Mrs.Hale, who discover the clues and establish a motive amid seemingly harmless items in the Wright home. The story ends with an ironic between Henderson and Mrs.Hale :

COUNTY ATTORNEY (facetiously). Well, Henry, at least we found out that she was not going to -------- what is it you call it, ladies?

MRS.HALE (her hand against her pocket). We call it ------- knot it, Mr.Henderson.

Symbolism

1) Bird : Mr. Wright's spirit

2) Cage : John Wright's oppression of his wife and her spirit

3) Stove, Cold House and Broken Jars : When the stove fire goes out, the house temperature drops below freezing point and all but one of the preserve jars break. The stove fire appears to represent John and Minnie Wright's marriage. The fire probably goes out just before or immediately after the murder. The resulting temperatures crack the jars of preserves, apparently representing Minnie's mental being. That jar that remains intact seems to symbolize the modicum of sanity left to her and the hope for a brighter future that Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters envision for her.

4) Unevenly Sewn Quilt Block : Mrs. Wright's disturbed mental condition.

5) Rope: Minnie Wright's unsurpation of male power. Strangulation is a man's method of killing . In her rebellion against her domineering husband, Minnie musters the strength to murder like a man, thus perversely asserting her quality.

It is because Hermia loves Lysander and wanted to be with him(pg:25)This leads to Hermia had been given the decision to become a nun or be killed if she doesnt agree with the plan.(pg:27)

2)Hermia and Lysander planned to meet Lysander's aunt because they wanted to elope in a place unknown to everyone including her own father(pg:33). Thus, her father will never got to stop the love between Hermia and Lysander, and she will never marries Demetrius, who she doesnt even love.

3)Helena is a friend to both Lysander and Hermia. She decided to reveal the couple's escape plan to Demetrius because she thought that Demetrius will follow them to woods, and during that time Helena will follow him and try to win his love eventhough she got rejected before, believing that he will go back to her once knowing Hermia will never accept him.(Pg:39)

4) Bottom was given the role of Pyramus. Quince succeeded in convincing him by saying that Bottom was the most suitable one to play the part, also stating that Pyramus should be someone handsome, implying Bottom was tricked into thinking himself as handsome.

5)The tradesmen are worried about lion’s part in their production because if one roars too terribly it would fright the duchess and the ladies in the audience. That would be enough for them to all be hung by the duke.

1.2
1)The speaker is Theseus. He was talking to Hippolyta.
Theseus had won against Hippolyta and he had hurt her in the battle. Afterwards he wanted to marry her in a grand, happy celebration.

2)The speaker is Lysander. “The course of true love never did run smooth” means there will always be problems in a romantic relationship. Hermia’s father is against Hermia and Lysander being together and decided that she shall marry Demetrius. If she refuses, she’ll have to either die or become a nun. So Lysander offers comfort by saying those words

3)The speaker is Bottom. He was talking to Peter Quince. He wanted to play the lion’s part as well eventhough he was already given a part. Peter quince said he would scare the ladies, thus Bottom said he would roar as sweet as nightingale and as soft as dove.

Peter Quince convince Bottom to accept the part by saying that no one else suit the character better than he does since Pyramus is a good-looking man. Therefore, Bottom is the most convincing to play the part.
Question 4.(Act 4) What does Shakespeare say about love and infatuation? (pg. 145, line 146-153) (pg. 147, line 164-175)

Shakespeare portrays love and infatuation as if it was a dream; vivid and real while it lasts, but then quickly over and gone.People tend to fall in love with things that appear beautiful to them but real love goes beyond physical attraction. For example, Helena is more beautiful that Hermia. however, Lysander still loves Hermia despite her beauty cannot be compare dto Helena. That is real love>Puck makes the lovers think that all of the events that happened in the forest were just a dream. For example, Demetrius' love towards Hermia vanished after the potion effected him. Meanwhile, his love for Helena suddenly grows. On the other hand, Lysander's love for Helena during the potion fades away after the potion was removed. This shows that love and infatuation is something that is temporary and can be replaced at anytime.

Act 4, Question 1 : How does Titania respond Oberon asked for the fairy child this time? What does this reveal about the strength of the love potion?

Act 4, page 139, line 59-61

When Oberon asked Titania for the Indian child, she straight away gave the boy to him without any question or resistance because she was too taken up with Bottom. She was too in love with a Bottom to care about other people or thing at the moment. This shows the strength of the love potion as a power to make one falls in love with another despite their prior emotions and also symbolises the irrational nature of love.

Act 4 Question 2: How does Theseus's current decision regarding Hermia and Lysander contradicts his earlier statement?

-In act 1 scene 1, which happens in Athens, Theseus is following the law of Athens which is to punish Hermia to death or become a nun if she refuses to marry Demetrius as his father's wish. (Page 27 line 65)
-Act 4 Scene 1: In the forest, Theseus approve Lysander and Hermia's relationship and allow them to get married. This decision is against the law of Athens and also diagreed by Egeus. (Page 147 line 177)
-From this, we can see that Theseus is a contradictory character. His statement changes according to the situation eventhough it is against the law. His first statement is made in the Athens while the second statement is made in the forest where the law of Athens is not applied there. That may be the reason he can change his statement. He is also not easily influenced by Egeus as he is the Duke of Athens. He makes a decisions that seems the best according to his judgement.

Question: What is your opinion of Bottom's character? How might he be the antithesis, or opposite, of Theseus' character?

Act 3 scene 1 line 96

Bottom is the victim of circumstances for the quarrell between the two fairies, Oberon and Titania. First, his head got turned into an ass because of Puck's act of mischief. Then, he immediately got dumped by Titania after the love potion power got lifted off her. After the event, he put up a bad play for the new weds. In a nutshell, he is a fool that got fooled by the others.

Act 1 scene 1 line 16
Act 1 scene 2 line 21-34

The antithesis of Bottom and Theseus character is....
