by: Shaun David Hutchinson, Kendare Blake, Steve Brezenoff, Delilah S. Dawson, Trish Doller, Margie Gelbwasser, E.M. Kokie, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Tom Leveen, Hannah Moskovitz, Elisa Nader, Beth Revis, Mindi Scott, Neal and Brandon Shusterman, Courtney Summers, Blythe Woolston, Christine Johnson, 2016
It took only twenty-two minutes for Kirby Matheson to exit his car, march onto school grounds, enter the gymnasium, and open fire, killing six and injuring five others. But this isn't a story about the shooting itself. This isn't about recounting that one unforgettable day.
This is about Kirby and how one boy—who had friends, enjoyed reading, played saxophone in the band, and had never been in trouble before—became a monster capable of entering his school with a loaded gun and firing on his classmates. Each chapter is told from a different victim's viewpoint, giving insight into who Kirby was and who he'd become. Some are sweet, some are dark; some are seemingly unrelated, about fights or first kisses or late-night parties.

The song "Pumped Up Kicks", by Foster The People Relates this book because the lyrics are talking about kids out running a gun. Foster The People made this song to raise awareness about teen gun violence which relates perfectly to Violent Ends.

Kirby's Perspective

I went over to her house late at night to save her from her dad. I pulled up in my old truck waiting for to escape from the window. Like usual we went to the old diner town the street to meet our friends. It got later into the night and she said had to go back home before her dad found out she snuck out. I dropped her off but knew something was wrong I waited for a little bit then went home. The next day she didn't come to school I quickly drove to her house. Her dad was home and she was in her room, her legs were so beat up she couldn't move. I told her something had to be done and I tried give her a gun but she declined I heard her dad telling me I had to leave so I left and hoped she would be okay.

An artifact that revolves around the whole book would be the gun Kirby used to complete is massacre. There is a chapter in the book that is based on the gun's perspective. It tells the story of where kirby got the gun and where he hides it. The gun wants Kirby's parents to find before its to late and almost tries to tell Kirby to give him away.

Quote

"I know its kind of last minute, Kirby offered. "But I, um - I was waiting for the perfect opportunity".
Im sorry, but I can't.
This quote really stands out to me because this is another situation that caused the school shooting. Kirby tried to ask Morgan to the homecoming dance and she rejected him. A few days later Morgan and her best friend Sydney were walking into school when they saw Kirby pull out a gun, he shot Sidney in the shoulder. She died in Morgan's arms. Later in the chapter it focuses on Morgan's point of view a year later and she thinks to herself maybe this wouldn't have happened if she had just said yes.
