Thomas Savery
Savery was an English engineer an inventor, born in 1650. He experienced the difficult problem of pumping water out of coal mines. He invented a machine with a closed vessel filled with water into which steam under pressure was introduced, forcing the water to a higher level, when the water was expelled, a sprinkler condensed the steam, producing a vacuum capable of drawing up more water through.

In 1774 he continued his experiments on electricity. He devised a perpetual electrophorus that could transfer charge to other objects, and in the next few years he noticed the bubbling of methane in swamps and was able to isolate the gas. Volta put together a rather messy stack of alternating zinc and silver discs, separated by brine-soaked cloth. He built the pile, which consisted of as many as thirty disks, and that was how the created what he initially described as an “artificial electric organ".

He was mainly involved with chemical experiments in the laboratory. He also began lecturing on chemistry topics at the Philosophical Society. In 1831, Faraday returned to his work on electricity and made what is arguably his most important discovery, named the electro-magnetic induction. This discovery was the opposite of that which he had made ten years earlier. He showed that a magnet could induce an electrical current in a wire. He was able to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and discover the first dynamo.
