Personally, I don't see how using government money towards arts and music would offer anything beneficial during a time of struggle for most Americans. It was all about relief, recovering, and reform and using the money towards the economy would help do so.

There wasn't a good reason for using government money on the arts during such a financially difficult time nationwide. FDR's 3 r's recovery, relief and reform should have been the main focus and not music and art. When your country is in trouble you have to do something to dig yourself out of it.

Title: Skating in Central Park, 1934
Painter: Agnes Tait

I chose this photo due to the unity of the community it depicts. It is a piece that helps to show the notion of moral capitalism, and how people from a diverse set of backgrounds can come together to do something as simple as have a nice day in the park. I feel that a major part of surviving the Great Depression was finding joy in the small things in life, so for this to be a scene worth immortalizing in a painting, it must have truly brought joy to all involved.

I feel as if the arts should have been more of a hobby or a personal means of expression during this time as opposed to a federally supported occupation. Relief money would have, in my mind, been better spent elsewhere. Many new government infrastructure improvements did need to be made, such as establishing more aid programs for the needy. Once the immediate issues that were addressed with FDR's 3 R's were addressed then sure, spend some money on the arts because people will be able to pay for the pieces or attend concerts. Then use the revenue from those events to help artists survive. During the GD however, people did not have much extra money to pay for art or the services of artists and in turn this would not generate any substantial revenue. It seems like the monetary investment into the arts would lead to a dead weight loss.
