My teaching was focused around academic achievements. 

    My teachers way of teaching was not supportive of my learning. Every child was expected to learn the same way. I was not afforded any flexibility and my social and emotional needs were unmet. 

    The teaching I received damaged my learning because it built a fear around education, and lowered my confidence and self esteem. Overall I did not receive an equitable education.

    Teachers must resist and advocate for the students to make their education equitable. I learned a solid foundation of subjects, including math, science, history, and English. I learned to think critically, analyze, and extrapolate complex situations and subjects.
    2.) My education severely lacked a "safe space" and was very by the book. There was not a lot of interference with bullying or dismantling cliques. I think humanizing a classroom and providing a guiding hand to avoid those types of dynamics would have significantly improved my education.  
    3.) I want to unlearn the "average" and what a "gifted" child is, as "GATE" education only alienated me from my peers. I want to unlearn things that perpetuate white supremacy and English supremacy.
    4.) Emotional intelligence, compassion, and understanding are often left on the back burner to hitting standards and testing unfortunately. I will say I had a lot outstanding teachers though.

I moved back to the U.S. during the mid-way point of my third grade year. 

    I know I learned a lot in fourth grade, because the difference between my reading ability at the beginning of the year and the end was great. I not only learned how to read better, but I learned how to feel more confident about reading aloud. My fluency jumped by leaps and bounds. 

    I still remember how this teacher valued reading. She had us to a lot of reading-related work, and her encouragement, coupled with my drive to excel at English, resulted in a firm grasp of the English language within the first year of learning it. And what did I end up majoring in? English. Something they did well was exposing us to the history we didn't get in the curriculum. Most of my learning came from home back then.  My teachers placed high standards us to succeed; kid-like behavior wasn't tolerated. I got in a lot trouble for minor things like laughing, taking too long to wash my hands in the bathroom, talking to a friend or being perceived as being sarcastic. By trouble I mean, after-school detentions, writing letters to my parents, missing gym or recess or accosting.

    I think the experience made me more introverted than I would have otherwise been. It made me feel ashamed and unworthy of praise. Whatever good grades I did get were not celebrated and the bad grades were penalized with more work or detention. I loved the social aspect of school, though. Luckily back then we had plenty of time to be with our friends without too much adult supervision in places like the playground or school gym.  

    Particular teachers definitely come to mind when I think about the "damaging" effects. The worst teacher, in my opinion, was one I continued to avoid into adulthood in public spaces. For a while I would see her at my Gym and then I knew it was time to leave.
