Putting Cell Transport into Context by Scott Brungardt

Please think of an example of real passive transport (i.e. simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis) OR active transport (i.e. molecular transport, endocytosis, exocytosis). Alternately, you can think of an analogy of something that mimics passive or active transport. For either option, draw on your own background, personal experiences, activities, culture, family and friends, etc. Post your "story" of passive OR active transport to the wall, and be sure to include which specific type of transport your story represents. Please include your initials along with your story title in the heading of your post. See my example. :)

When I was little, I loved Sesame Street's Cookie Monster. I would sit on my dad's bean bag and watch cartoons with my stuffed Cookie Monster by my side. One morning, Cookie Monster smelled chocolate chip cookies from the other room, so he and I ran into the kitchen and grabbed to cookie and cup of milk to enjoy together. Cookie Monster was able to smell the baking cookies because awesome-smelling particles in the air moved from an area of high concentration in the kitchen to an area of low concentration in the living room. This is an example of SIMPLE DIFFUSION through the air.

One time when we went to the fair we were walking past the food tents. There was an amazing aroma (air particles)of cotton candy, funnel cakes and much more. The highly concentrated smell from the tents escaped to a low concentrated area where we were standing. The tents practically begged for our money to get a sweet treat.

My family and I would have to rake the leaves every weekend or whenever we had the time. Usually there would be more leaves in some places more than others. We’d find which spot had the most leaves and start from there. My family and I would rake all of the less concentrated areas and move them to the area with the more leaves. This is an example of molecular active transport.

I had never been to the ocean before this trip to California. The water was so much different than anything else I had ever experienced. It was really cold for one thing, but it was also very salty. It didn’t take me or my siblings very long to get into the ocean. We had a lot of fun for our first time at the beach. After swimming in the cold water we we lay on the warm sand then run back to the cold water. The waves were really big and every time we got dunked under we could feel the salt water burning our nose and eyes. This would be an example of osmosis because of the salt following or being in the water.

But a tradition we have is when we go out there we rent a boat and go deep see fishing. Except one year we decided to go to Hawaii instead. So we got on the boat and we were off. Once we got deep out the boat started to rock pretty hard. My mom actually got sea sick and threw up. But we looked off the edge and the waves were huge! Then next thing you know we see a huge whale about 70 yards out from our boat jump out of the water! That was followed by a group of dolphins, and 3 oceanic white tipped sharks. Good thing we made it back safely. This is an example of SIMPLE DIFFUSION, Osmosis in the water.
