An article in a pro-abolitionism paper written by Frederick Law Olmstead portrays the difference in development in the north and south. In the eyes of the author, the north is using its funding to develop infrastructure and better conditions, while the south is continuously diverting its money into maintaining the institution of slavery. This remains relevant due to the article continuing to push sectionalist ideals and speaks out against slavery, the main topic of dissent between the north and south leading to the Civil War. The purpose of this article is to highlight the north's further economic development in contrast to the south's reliance on slave labor.

In a letter to a US Marshall enforcing the Fugitive Slave Laws from African American tailor and abolitionist by the name of Henry Weeden, he explains that he won't provide his tailoring services for the Marshall because he values his morality and cause over profit. He specifically references the lynching of African Americans for a small dollar amount as a way of highlighting the immorality and indignity of the time in exchange for money. The conflict over the Fugitive Slave Laws created sectionalism between the north and south and further pressed the issue over the institution of slavey. This dispute over slavery and the sectionalism it brought was a major contributing factor to the American Civil War. This letter was written to stand up against the Fugitive Slave Law and was an example of the continuous fight against slavery by African Americans and abolitionists.

In a statement from Chief Justice Taney presiding over the Dread-Scott case, he explains his decision that slaves are not entitled to the rights of Americans. This document demonstrates the institution of slavery's sectional support with southern sympathizers and southerners, and therefore the greater division in and outside of government. The larger purpose of this document was to solidify the inferiority of slaves in this time, creating a greater rift in perspective that is becoming harder and harder to ignore or compromise over.
