Philosophy of Online Learning/Teaching

My online learning/teaching philosophy is to use digital pedogogical tools that support collaboration, curiosity, and productivity while meeting the needs of all students through building a learner based classroom to meet the needs of all students. As stated in the National Standards for Quality Online Teaching Standards, "The online teacher curates and creates instructional materials, tools, strategies, and resources to engage all learners and ensure achievement of academic goals" (p. 27). It was helpful to explore and learn about many online tools that can help make content engaging for students. Another part of my online teaching strategy is to build classroom community by creating a collaborative environment. Chapter 4 states "A sense of belonging within any educational environment is shown to help improve student persistence and retention" (p. 59).

How can online learning environments be used to support students' social and emotional well-being?

Technology makes SEL easy and engaging. There are many ways to incorporate SEL strategies and activities in an online classroom. Synchronous interactions can have a positive impact on SEL by allowing for creativity, freedom, and a low risk environment for students. They can use many different online tools to support their own and other classmates' social and emotional well-being. Asynchronous interactions also allows for positive SEL because students can collaborate and talk face to face about something they created online. They can still use the wide range of online tools to then discuss and interact with each other. Either way, community building is definitely possible in an online classroom! As stated in the Social Presence Model, sense of community is very important for students success in the classroom. "Students talk about how a sense of community helps 'reduce stress and the sense

of loneliness' and how it is important for 'each student . . . to help each other student . . .in order for everyone to do well in the class'" (p. 162).

My biggest aha about online teaching is that it can be just as community building and well-being supporting as a face to face classroom. The possibilities of technology are endless and the ways that we can use it as teachers to support our students and their needs.

What readings have opened your eyes? What activities/concepts will make their way into your classroom?

The readings that opened my eyes were the Online Accessibility Handbook and Chapter 8 "Supporting Learners with Special Needs." I use online and paper resources in my classroom, and I didn't know about all of the accessibility features that could be used to support students' learning. Chapter 8 states "That fact serves as an important reminder to scaffold activities into your instruction that support students' development" (p. 209). Some activities and tools that I plan on using in my classroom are Padlet, Quizizz, Conceptboard, and Flip. I also like the idea of adding an attendance question into my lessons to check in with students and get them ready to learn.

I also enjoyed self reflecting on my own Blended Model in my classroom. It was helpful to use the PICRAT model and see the different ways to classify relationships between my students and technology. I learned that even the mindset of blended learning is important for my students. iNACOL Standard A in Mindset states "Shift from teacher-led instruction to student-centered learning for the purposes of meeting individual needs and fostering engagement and motivation" (p. 13). When using digital activities to teach my content, my goal is to create experiences rather than lessons for my students.
