The way that the Native Americans were treated eventually lead to the start of slavery. A lot of textbooks today can't be bothered to explain what Columbus and the Spaniards actually did without dousing it in euphemisms. One of the most shocking parts to me was that some of the torture was done purely for entertainment (such as decapitating innocent Native American boys). It was pretty disgusting for me to learn this. It also surprised me that even in the 21st century, textbooks still aren't teaching Columbus the way that it should be taught; they make excuses for the unnecessary torturing and killing of Native Americans which I deem 100% unacceptable. My biggest question is, how can we teach Columbus better so that kids are more aware of what he really did? I would like to know more about what happened to the Native American community after the beginning of slavery.
