Sex Therapy means a space where you collaborate with your partner and therapist to find the confidence to create a more well-rounded understanding of yourself and your sexuality. It also means that you get to dive into your previous sexual self and to navigate pivotal moments in your past that affected you, your confidence and/or your sexual identity. It's a space and time set aside to grow confidently into your most authentic sexual being through communication and learning with your partner.

I feel that one of the myths in regard to sex is knowing what you're doing. There is no "correct" way of sex or sexuality and I feel that pornography and society have paved way for this idealized version of it that isn't obtainable or accurate. I think that sex and our sexual identity are unique and should be empowered. Empowering a persons individuality is what helps honest communication in sexual identity and also helps promotes better & safer sex practices for the individual.

One idea in sex is that men and women should both orgasm in a sexual encounter. I don't feel that that is accurate at all. Women can orgasm and continue in the sexual encounter whereas men can sometimes orgasm and be done with the sexual encounter. Both are okay and yet, it creates a space where the man's orgasm is seemingly "more important" because once it happens it's done. Men and women encounter orgasm differently and it's important to remember that when engaging in sexual activity with a partner. I appreciate learning about orgasms for both males and females because it helps individuals to more easily communicate about their sexual lives and experiences. It also allows for individuals to honestly communicate their needs and desires in those moments in a way that builds their intimate relationships.

Another thing to think about is how A LOT of individuals view penetrative sex with a condom as completely safe. Though we all love the idea of it; there are plenty of concerns that pave way to understanding that penetrative sex with a condom isn't as safe as it could seem. It's great to have more education around the accuracy of condoms and preventing pregnancy & I feel that having the statistical data can help individuals decide the best course of action for birth control or safe sex practices. Though we are taught the importance of a condom when we are younger, I don't feel that we are adequately educated on safe sex practices as a whole. It's also important to know and understand the other ways that you can prevent pregnancy and have safe sex with a partner in the way that best seems fit with you. "Adult Sex Ed" would greatly benefit individuals in having healthy and beneficial sex lives.

I really love this photo because there is this idealized/sexualized version of a persons body that is seemingly unrealistic. The woman in the photo looks confident, empowered and bold enough to display herself in a way that many could see as sexual or obscure. Her beauty is personified in her confidence, courage and strength. This is where I feel that society sees it differently because she is someone who is aware of herself and what she could offer. Society wants the opposite where it can maintain profit and I love this in regard to our assignment because I strive to be similar to her. Someone who is confident, empowered and encouraged for being herself AND empowered to embrace genuine beauty and strength in a woman. This is my favorite image in this padlet.

The biggest thing that I would love to get out of this assignment is a better understanding of all sexual identities and preferences. I feel that being a sex therapist would entail understanding all sexual identities to a degree that allows us to create a safe space for our clients. Though I may not be in that specific place, I would hope to have enough understanding to allow the client to be vulnerable and honest about themselves and their sexual identities. I would love to be continually learning and growing in this area and areas that better support the undervalued communities.
