During the first five years of the great depression, the economy shrank by an estimated50%. The Depression affected politics by destroying the confidence in unfettered capitalism. That type of “laissez-faire economics” is what President Herbert Hoover advocated, and it had failed during the great depression. As a result, people lost trust in Herbet Hoover and instead voted for Franklin Roosevelt. His “Keynesian economics” assured that government spending would end the Great Depression. The new deal worked well and 1934, the economy grew 17% and unemployment declined.
