I used to hate writing and not view myself as a particularly capable writer. Then, when I moved high schools I got a GREAT literature teacher and she ignited a deeper understanding of writing and appreciation for well-written responses. That really helped me to improve my writing abilities to a point where I feel capable, but I would say that I don't consider myself a "writer." I can write decently well, but I rarely find solace in writing.

I don't particularly like writing, but I think I can be a good writer when I try. I never write for joy so in that sense I do not view myself as a writer. To be a better writer I always read aloud what I have written. I find many mistakes that way (also shout out grammarly).

I have a weird relationship with Writing. We met in 6th grade and it was not a good start. Writing couldn't settle for one language. In French, they wanted one thing. In English, another. Moving into high school and college, the relationship with English got better, while I ignored the French. In any case, the relationship was not perfect. It wasn't until after college that I started to enjoy writing, for myself. While I'm still a subpar writer, but writing for myself has become therapeutic.

I have identified as a writer since I was a kid, when I would write these 100 pages novellas for fun. I once was accused of plagiarism because my writing was "too good" for my age, and ever since then I have felt like writing is a little bit of an act of resistance. And every now and again, I ask myself, "should I write a historical romance novel?" just for fun.

I always dread the process of writing, but enjoy the end result. I sometimes identify as a writer, depending on what kind of writing we're talking about. I often feel insecure about my historical writing because I can't help but compare myself to professors who have written books (even though that is an unfair comparison!). However, when I write articles or other smaller pieces, I feel more like a writer. I feel very disconnected from how I'm teaching about writing since I'm used to the college-y type of writing

1. I don't know that I have thought about my relationship with writing super deeply - it feels more like a method or way of communication than something I think about in and of itself
2. I see writing as a valuable tool for organizing thoughts, communicating, etc. but don't consider myself "a writer" - that being said I do write a lot whether in academic settings or reflectively
3. I really like outlining before I write and think in lists more than passages so I tend to list things out and then turn them into "writing"
4. I think that I focus on clarity a lot in teaching writing - maybe that has to do with seeing writing as a vehicle first and foremost

This does not make me excited to teach kids though and build their confidence in it so they can access it as a mode of expressing themselves

I especially developed as a writer in the second half of undergrad, when I did a lot of historical writing. The way I write - heavy on planning, light on revisions/editing - definitely impacts the way I think about teaching writing. The writing process works very differently for everyone, so it's hard to pick one method and make everyone do that... but it's also hard not to teach the way that I know.
