2./ Two-bit arrives and the conversation turns to fighting - Cherry is shocked. 2./ A blue mustang approaches. Cherry's boyfriend Bob is in the car. He and Two-bit threaten to fight each other. Cherry stops them. 
3./ Two-bit and Johnny decide to hang out at the vacant lot. Ponyboy falls asleep - when he gets home his brother Darry is furious. they fight, Darry slaps Ponyboy. Shocked, Ponyboy decides to run away. He returns to Johnny, realises he is lucky  compared to Johnny's truely abusive home situation and has second thoughts, then he decides to hang out in the park to 'cool off'. When he gains consciousness, he is on the ground. The Soc's have fled and Bob is lying on the ground oozing blood. He is dead. Johnny has killed him with his switchblade.
2./ Ponyboy panics, but Johnny calmly suggests they go to Dally for help. Dally gives them money, warm clothes and a gun. 2./ One morning they watch the sun rise. The mist looks beautiful and gold across the valley. They talk about Robert Frost's poem 'Nothing Gold Can Stay'.
3./ On day five, Dally visits and takes them to a Diner for food. He tells them Cherry is willing to testify in court that Johnny killed Bob is self defence. Johnny decides he will turn himself in. 
4./ As they pull up to the old church, they see it is on fire. There is a school group there and children are trapped in the fire. Ponyboy and Johnny rush in and save five children. He is told Dally and Johnny are also being rushed to the hospital. Ponyboy has minor burns. Dally has badly burnt his arm, but he will be alright. Johnny is in a critical condition. A roof beam fell on him possibly breaking his back and he has serious burns.
2./ In the ambulance, Ponyboy tells Jerry (the school teacher on the scene) about Bob's murder. Jerry agrees it is self defence. 
3./ Sodapop and Darry arrive at the hospital. Darry and Ponyboy apologise to each other for arguing. The police question them and reporters come from the local paper to question them too. They learn that if Johnny survives, he will be a paraplegic. He will never walk again.
2./ The next day, Ponyboy sees an article about them in the newspaper, the headline is 'Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes.' it tells the whole story of the fight, the death and recommends that the brothers should be allowed to stay together. 
3./ Ponyboy and Two-bit go for a walk. A group of Soc's pull up in a car. Randy gets out, but instead of fighting, he asks to talk with Ponyboy. They sit in his car and Randy says he is tired of fighting and will not join the 'rumble'. He tells Ponyboy that Bob was a good friend who had drinking and temper troubles. Johnny becomes distressed, he refuses to see her and then passes out. 
2./ Ponyboy and Two-bit visit Dally. Dally is not happy he will miss the 'rumble' and he is worried and upset about Johnny. Dally makes Two-bit give him his switchblade. 
3./ As they walk home, Cherry Valance pulls up. She says the Soc's plan to play by the Greaser rules and not use weapons. Ponyboy asks if she will visit Johnny in hospital. Cherry refuses. She cannot see the person who killed her boyfriend Bob. Ponyboy thinks she is a traitor and gets angry. She then explains why she was with Bob and that he had some good qualities. When they get to the vacant lot, there are 22 Soc's and 20 Greasers. Darry starts the fight - then suddenly Dally joins in (he has escaped from hospital). The fight is brutal, but the Greasers win and the Soc's run away. Ponyboy is injured and the gang have suffered broken bones, cuts and bruises. 
2./ Dally and Ponyboy decide to go and visit Johnny after the fight. As they drive to the hospital Dally gets increasingly upset. At the hospital a doctor tells them Johnny is dying. 
3./ They tell Johnny they won the fight. Johnny has just enough strength to say his last words, "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." Then, Johnny dies. He keeps telling himself that Johnny is not dead. He wanders the streets. A stranger picks him up and kindly drives him home. 
2./ Dally is so upset, he runs off and robs a gas station. He phones Darry to say he needs help, the police are chasing him. So the gang rush to the vacant lot to help Dally get way.
3./ The police get there first. Dally stands under the streetlight and raises an unloaded gun. The police do not know there are no bullets. They fire at Dally and kill him instantly, as the gang watches on. 
4./ Ponyboy thinks about all of Dally's good qualities with sadness, then he passes out. He wakes up three days later after being delirious and in hospital.
5./ Johnny has left Ponyboy his copy of 'Gone with the Wind'. 2./ Randy (a Soc and Bob's best friend) comes to visit Ponyboy. He says he will tell the truth about Bob's death at the court hearing the next day. He seems genuinely concerned when Ponyboy tells him they are scared the court will split him up from Sodapop and Darry. 
3./ Ponyboy is confused and keeps insisting that he (Ponyboy) was the one who killed Johnny. The judge lets Ponyboy off and allows him to return home with Darry and Sodapop.
2./ Ponyboy's concussion is affecting him badly. He has memory loss, confusion and he struggles to care about anything. His grades at school are also dropping.
3./ His English teacher offers him a deal to pass if he can write a good essay on his own life.
4./ Ponyboy, Steve and Two-bit go to the shop. A car full of Soc's pulls up. Ponyboy gets uncharacteristically aggressive, he smashes a bottle and threatens to fight them. Two-bit takes him aside afterwards and tells him it is not his true nature to be tough and angry. 
5./ That evening, Sodapop gets upset when a letter to his girlfriend Sandy is returned unopened. Sodapop asks Darry and Ponyboy to stop fighting and putting him in the middle. Darry and Ponyboy apologise and agree to try to get along. 
6./ later Ponyboy picks up Johnny's copy of 'Gone with the Wind'. There is a letter in there for him. Johnny tells Ponyboy to "stay gold, 'to keep watching the sunsets and appreciating the world as if it were new.' 
7./ Ponyboy sits down to write his English assignment. We realise he is writing the first lines of this novel.
