Zygmunt Bauman was born in 1925 in Poznan, a German city that became Polish territory at the end of World War I. When in 1939 Hitler and Stalin decided to divide Poland under the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact of Non-Aggression, Bauman, of Jewish descent, went to take refuge with his family in the Soviet Union.

Throughout his career as a writer, which began in the 50s, he developed a critical and emancipatory sociology, in which he has touched on topics such as social classes, socialism, the Holocaust, hermeneutics, modernity and consumerism.

Among his works are: ‘The liquid modernity’ (2004); Líquido Liquid love: about the fragility of human ties ’(2005); ‘Europe, an unfinished adventure’ (2006); Pos Postmodern Ethics ’(2006), líquidos Liquid Times’ (2007), ‘Consumer Life’ (2007) and ‘Freedom’ (2008).

For more than half a century, Zygmunt Bauman was one of the most influential observers of social and political reality. He is described as a pessimist who enters the chorus of those who criticize postmodernism in search of the causes of the perverse social process in the world of ideas of anti-capitalist thinking. He created the term "liquid modernity", the title of a book he published in 2000, to describe the transformations of the contemporary world, in which nothing is solid: everything is diluted in the air. In his latest work, "Strangers at Our Door," he observes the crisis of refugees knocking on Europe's door.

Zygmunt Bauman died in Leeds, England, on January 9, 2017.
