Why Were Residential Schools Created?

The Residential Schools were funded by the Canadian government and run by churches (Anglican, Catholic etc...) to assimilate and change Aboriginal children into European-Canadian culture. An estimated 150,000 Aboriginal children were brought in.

The children were forced to leave their home, community, and families. The children were also made to forget their culture, religion, language, and beliefs. They were punished if they didn't follow the rules. Their hairs were cut (for boys) and their traditional clothes were not allowed. The children were also converted into Christianity. It was called "to kill the Indian in the child".

Why Would Survivors Of Residential Schools Want To Tell Their Stories To Others?

The survivors would want to share their stories to let Canadians and their families to know their hardships and traumatic events during their time in the Residential schools. They would also want to get their support and voices. The survivors can also be inspirations to others. The children of the survivors will bear their sufferings and pass down their stories to their children.

Some survivors used ways like to publish their story (books, etc..), doing interviews, and protesting to get people's attention.

Why Did the Government of Canada Hide The Conditions Inside The Schools From Other Canadians?

A poll by National Observer suggests that 47% of its participants did not learn anything about residential schools, which almost half of the poll's participants (381 of 812).

If they didn't hide the fact that they are hurting and forcing young Aboriginal children to forget about their original lifestyle, Canadians would be enraged and will question the government's choices. The families of the children will probably fight to take their children back. Canadian supporters would protest and donate to the victims. It will cause negative opinions from citizens towards the government.

How Would The Experience Of Residential Schools Affect People and Communities?

The survivors of the Residential schools and their families were the most affected. The survivors of the residential schools were said to be sexually, physically, and emotionally abused. They would tell their stories to their children to let them know the cruel experiences during their time in the schools. Research says that some of the survivors in the future will become addicts (liquor, drugs), depressed, or violent. Sometimes they might take their own life.

Their community would also be affected as well. Their group/tribe would feel violated and sympathy. They might help them in their battle for justice, as well as calling for help for the poor Aboriginal peoples.
