You are a first-year nursing student completing your clinical placement on a busy medical-surgical unit. You have been assigned to care for three patients today with your practice supervisor. Your practice supervisor has gone to check medication with another nurse and she asks you to check on the patients you both have:

1. Patient A is a 65-year-old man who was admitted with pneumonia. He is currently receiving oxygen therapy via nasal cannula and has just started complaining of difficulty breathing and chest pain.

2. Patient B is a 45-year-old woman who underwent a hip replacement surgery yesterday. She is in a lot of pain and is requesting her pain medication she rates her pain as 8/10. She also needs assistance getting out of bed to use the bathroom.

3. Patient C is a 30-year-old man who was admitted for a flare-up of his ulcerative colitis. He is experiencing severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea, and needs to be monitored closely for signs of dehydration he has had an accident and needs help following diarrhoea.

You realise that all three patients require your immediate attention. You must prioritise your care and decide which patient needs to be seen first. Make sure to consider the severity of their condition, the urgency of their needs, and the resources available to you.

How would you prioritise the care of these three patients? What actions would you take for each patient?
