It is always influenced by society, culture, and context. I want begin by acknowledging the Kizh, 

Acjachemen, and Tongva Nations whose land we are fortunate to gather on as an institution.                       

To the Class of 2021: I want to draw your attention back to my first sentence. Art is not made in a vacuum. Everything that we create is influenced by our experiences. This past year has been one of the most challenging years we could ever have imagined. Rather than be buried by circumstance, you have used your voices and talents to not only create and finish your studies, but also to impact change. It has been such a humbling and inspiring experience to have you in my classes. You asked tough questions and shared personal perspectives. There is a beauty in empathy and I have seen it in your works and in the way in which you support one another. LCAD is incredibly proud of you and I hope that even after you leave, you will continue to show compassion, challenge the status quo, and use your art to continue to mold our understanding and experience of the world. I wish you all a heartfelt congratulations!

You are so talented and I was lucky to learn from not only Prof Joe but from all of you!
My advice...never stop learning. But also? Trust your unique instinct. And paint. Everyday.
