In the cartoon drawn by Pat Oliphant, the Chinese waiter pronounces the letter “r” as if it were an “l.” For example, the waiter pronounces the phrase “Rotten American” as “Lotten Amellican!” How might Gene Luen Yang’s discovery of this cartoon have influenced how he constructs Chin-Kee’s speech patterns?

It influenced Chin-Kee's speach patterns in a big way. Every time Chin-Kee pronounces an "r", he pronounces it as an "l". Chin-Kee also pronounces "th" as a "ff". He gave Chin-Kee a stereotypical accent through writing.

That comic that Yang got inspiration from has the racist stereotype that Asian people, especially Chinese, cant say "R"s, and replace them with "L"s. Showing that Yang really wanted Chin-kee to be a very big Chinese stereotype, to show how awful it is. Im also pretty sure in the story Chin-kee also replaces "th"s with "f"s or something along those lines, really giving him a stereotypical accent in the story.

Chin-Kee talks the same way the waiter does, mixing up his r's for l's, and he also says ff instead of th. There are other ways he says thing differently, like instead of Danny he says Dan-Nee.

I think he definitely used her speech as a way to show how un-American chin kee is. You could just read this in your head and almost instantly know that chin kee is from an ashin culcher. Which is what I think the writers got the whole time. He wants you to have no mistake on who he is. And he does a good job but he uses all the wrong stereotypes.
