Word Stress and Sentence Stress are key when speaking and understanding the English language.

Word stress refers to the strongest (loudest)or stressed syllable being identified or said resulting in correct pronunciation and understanding. The weaker syllable is quieter and not as distinct, but is necessary to form the word. This accented syllable can shift, altering the pronunciation.
Example: PHOtograph
: phoTOgrapher

Sentence stress is when one word in a sentence is stressed whilst the other words are quieter. Two or more words can be stressed in a sentence and these are referred to as strong (loud) words and the other words in the sentence are weak (quiet words. Sentence stress can change the meaning of the sentence
Example: I LOVE studying English- I don't just like it, I love it
: I love studying English- not necessarily everyone likes to study English.

Exam Questions
1. Indentify the syllable stressed in each word: desert, desert, photograph, photographer.(4x2=8)
Answer: desert, desert, photograph, photographer

2. We want to go to town.(5x2=10)
Answers: We want to go. We want to go to town
Total:18 marks
