DAY 1 - CONNECTING

Most useful tool I've found for connecting: Twitter.

Only started using it properly, as in tweeting myself, earlier this year but already made lots of useful connections, mainly through attending events, so the f2f is still important, but it's then easy to keep in touch and see what the other person is up to - and also keep other people up to date with my projects/activities/thinking/useful links I've come across. We still exchange emails but that's only at a certain point of need, Twitter is more sustained. Problem: some of my contacts are less active on Twitter, tweet rarely and probably don't check timeline frequently, don't know what I'm up to even if they follow me

Effective tweeting: I'm aware of the basics, we had really useful 'web-savvy' training for researchers in my faculty, and try to use them when I can, but can't tweet everyday as I work part-time, so find it difficult to tweet on my non-working days when looking after my kids

Have used Twitter with a small PG class last term, found it a good way to explore Twitter and tweeting with my students who like me, then were still new to it, presented it as a tool to them that's useful for keeping up to date with professional developments, asked them to tweet links from an online resource we were exploring, held a Twitter Q&A with an expert, and tweeted new stories - a small number of students really got into it (quieter in class) and it

Looking for ideas how to use it for large Yr 1 class, already thought of 1) library selfies (with books found), links to useful book they've found (does library website have twitter sharing button? probably not), 2) put elements of reference on paper cut outs in right order, first group to tweet wins a prize, 3) tweet and/or pic of your news consumption, 4) tweet picks of unusual/creative adverts you come across, 5) tweet you day in ads/brands,...

Facebook - try to join some professional/academic/educator groups, privacy issues with company

Google + need to work out how it works (note: want to try Google Hangout, poss with C & S)

LinkedIn I'm on it but benefit less obvious to me, probably better if you work in the industry, academic recruitment still seems to work in traditional ways (different views in Day 1 tweet chat: you never know when a complete profile will be useful)

What I want to get out of BYOD4L

First heard about it at MMU Melsig event in April, interested in the whole area of TEL, specifically mobile device learning. BYOD4L seems like a great opportunity to learn with like-minded people. Also interested in the way it's delivered, i.e. online, as we & our students will increasingly learn this way in the future.

Aim: to explore a number of tools that I've been planning to explore for a while (registered a while ago, but never got round to doing much)

Find ideas/solutions for my own scenarios a) large Yr 1 class, need to learn infoskills - using lib resources, lit search, referencing, essay writing; b) wiki tool for Yr3 group project with external partner

My approach to mobile devices: Smartphone - do a lot with it (work and personal), but not actually in class; would like to explore feasibilty.

Tablet - this is a device shared among the family, I'd like to do more with it but there's 'competition' from other family members who gets to use it :)
