They summarize the article and write about the events affect on them, their school, home, community ect. After reading this chapter I think I will have the students discuss the articles in pairs or small groups to defend/debate their writing.

I can teach reading skills through Social Studies. It helps students to understand the world and it teaches students to make connections with the world around them. During these last four weeks of school I will look at incorporating more Social Studies Literature into my teaching. Children can find a whole new world thrugh magazines, and newspapers. I take the paper at home, so now I will start bringing the paper to school to also use for reading .

Reading and writing is the cornerstone of all subject areas. I will put reading and writing at the core. I will build the bulk of instruction on some textbook reading with a lot of supplemental and primary source reading, along with articles on current events. In addition, I will follow the task, text, talk framework: focus on a couple of guiding questions, read to inquire about these topics, respond in writing using evidence from texts to support ideas, and discuss or share regularly. In the area of Science, I will utilize the task, text, talk framework.

Social studies is very important , and unfortunately falls by the wayside in today's educational model. Current events need to be more heavily emphasized due to our global culture today.

I plan on using more authentic nonfiction literature that draws kids into the love of history. Current events will probably be my best avenue. I asked the students in my class what they thought about this, and they said they would love to have articles where they could debate or argue. This makes me think about how to allow this friendly confrontation around hot button issues of the past and present. I think it goes back to making sure I have a community where students can voice differing opinions and not worry about being bullied or feeling attacked for their beliefs.
