Sonny is a young boy who is in a rebellious phase, and she can not deal with her family smoothly. The fact that he is still in his teenage age ties back to the idea that he can not control himself in front of the family, and he thinks that he is not liked by his family. When Sonny anxiously asks his mother “‘Why doesn’t dad like me?’ I asked her. Mom looked as if I had slapped her in the face” (Hickam, 43). He is in the time of his age where he questions the love and relationship for his parents, but this shocked his mother. On another occasion, when his dad was standing alone with Sonny, he screams “‘Do you see all the trouble you’ve caused?’ He’d demanded. I was confused about exactly what trouble he had in mind” (Hickam 102). This shows the lack of communication between the two family members, and how Sonny can not understand his father completely. As this shows, Sonny is still immature to understand his dad’s thoughts and his actions.

Sonny’s family has a hard time dealing with each other, because his family have short tempers most of the time. In chapter one, Sonny is called from his grandfather that he is similar to his father. When his mother heard this, she outrages and “took me from Poppy and I clutched hard to her carried me out onto the front porch, stroking my hair and hushing me” (Hickham 13). This quote stood up because people will think that being compared to your father is a good thing. Still, Sonny’s mother had to outrage to this, and this shows how much the relationship between the families are falling apart. The mother offensively had to do this in front of the father, and this just made things worse. The mother might hate the father’s family and her husband, but she should not have done that in an obvious way. Sonny’s mother had to control her temper in this quote. Also, in chapter one when Sonny’s brother, Jim, screams at Sonny because Sonny’s bike hit him, “‘If anything of yours ever touches anything of mine again, he bellowed, ‘I’ll beat the ever-loving 🤬 out of you!’” (Hickam 18) This causes them to start a fight, and shows how short Jim’s temper is. Jim’s reason to outrage is unclear, and it made the family’s relationship with each other worse. He probably is short tempered because his father is, but that is not an excuse to just go at someone. Since the father and mother was not at home, that is another reason why they started fighting. The father and mother needs to understand the brothers relationship, and not leave their child together alone. This was all just a lack of family communication, and Sonny’s family needs to have better relationship with each other.

My role model is my best friend Joy, and she has been my best friend ever since first grade. She is kind hearted, and treats everyone nicely. She is one of the all A’s students, and is really good at all the sports. I admire her personality and her strength to be able to show effort in all her works. She helps everyone who is in need, and never insult anyone.

The top five qualities that I admire most in others is modesty, kindness, compassion, showing effort, and loving. I admire these person because that is the most important things in life, and I always try to have these. These are not shown by talents, but by the kindness of one’s heart. I believe that everyone can be kindhearted, but the person has to show effort to show this. A person can always show love to each other and not hate.
