She was born in Punjab, India and moved to Canada at the age of four. She gained a love of art from her mother, to whom she attributes the simple but meaningful illustrations that accompany many of her poems. Her relatable topics of abuse, femininity, relationships, and heartbreak make her short poems very accessible to those new to poetry. In college, she assembled a photo series called “Period” to challenge the societal taboo around the topic of menstrual periods. She constantly fights to change cultural norms that create inequality and uses her artistic power to spread messages she finds important. After reaching 3.6 million followers on Instagram, she was finally able to publish her first poetry collection, “milk and honey” in 2014. It has sold over 2.5 million copies and was on the New York Times best seller list for over 77 weeks. Her works are greatly influenced by Sikh religion which she studies as a way to connect to her heritage. In 2017, “the sun and her flowers” was published as her second collection of poetry.
