Mexico City, one of the largest urban centers in the world, faces a pressing issue of air pollution that affects millions of its inhabitants. The city’s geography, nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains and its dense population and rapid urban growth, traps pollutants, making it one of the most polluted cities in Latin America. This crisis impacts not only the health of residents but also their overall quality of life. This poster explores the sources of pollution, its effects on health, and the measures that can be taken to create a cleaner, healthier future for Mexico City.

Air pollution in Mexico City arises from several primary sources, each contributing to the complex mix of harmful particles in the air. The largest source is vehicular emissions; with over 5 million vehicles on the road daily, traffic congestion is a constant issue, emitting high levels of CO2, NO2, and other pollutants. Industrial emissions from factories and power plants add to this burden, producing gases and particulate matter that further degrade air quality. The unique geographical location of Mexico City exacerbates the issue, as the surrounding mountains trap pollution, reducing natural air circulation and intensifying smog.

The air quality in Mexico City directly and severely impacts health, particularly affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Prolonged exposure to pollutants like nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone, and particulate matter increases rates of asthma, bronchitis, and even heart disease. Vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, suffer most; for instance, children face developmental delays and are at a higher risk of chronic respiratory illnesses, while seniors experience exacerbated respiratory conditions.

Hello, my name is Christopher Collins. I was born in Saginaw MI, and lived in the area up until age 9. I'm half Mexican and I get it from my mother's side. My parents after getting married in Tennessee decided to live up north in Michigan to have their two sons, me and my brother. For the majority of those years, my family and I lived in the middle of nowhere in a small town named Kawkawlin. There wasn't much there other than cornfields and forests in the small dead end where I lived, so when my parents decided to live 1,000mi South in such a populated city, I immediately felt the difference.
