My Use of Technology Timeline

When I was a freshman in college, I used to make notes in a notebook and found typing distracting while the lecturer spoke. However, over the years, I realized how note-taking suddenly started disappearing from classrooms, and teachers would just share slides with students that had important points from the lecture summarized. By the time I graduated, I only saw people carrying around laptops and notebooks had disappeared altogether. This ties in with our dependence on our devices, even for learning and academic purposes and I do not see this changing in the future. Instead, I see students starting to switch from even laptops to smartphones.

When I first started teaching, I communicated to my students mainly through e-mail and vice versa. Any form of communication was done through the phone or by e-mail. It made it challenging when students wanted to send a presentation, or sometimes a sick note was lost in a sea of e-mails. Online communication and collaboration tools such as google classroom, Teams and Padlet has made it so much easier to communicate with students and for students to communicate, collaborate and work together. For instance, this year, my students were able to communicate daily through Padlet with students located in a small town in France. Without Padlet, such a meaningful learning experience would be near impossible.

We've really embraced the technological path at our school since COVID, and I went quite all in with Google Classroom and other tech tools. I'm actually working to pull it back a little bit, get my students off their devices more, and engage with each other with less distraction. They seem quite happy to have an excuse to be off tech for a period of time.
