Remembering More While Studying

I chose this video because it is extremely informative and interesting. This video refers to a more effective and less time consuming way of studying called spaced repetition. Spaced repetition uses a technique called the spacing effect. This is a technique our brain uses to make connections and remember things better by simply spacing out our learning over a period of time. He quotes past studies comparing people using the spacing effect versus not using it. It is crazy that he proves that forgetting information actually makes us better learners because we have to review and make the most of time and content! Thomas gives different examples of systems that can be used to help people study efficiently with things like flash cards, apps, etc. Overall, the spacing effect is the best way to retain information and I found this very interesting because I had never really heard about it, nor did I know about any of the research behind it.

Studying With Flash Cards

In this video, Thomas explains how to make effective flash cards and how to properly study flash cards. I chose this video because the way I have been making paper flash cards are the way he said was wrong in the first few seconds of the video (I figured this video could help me). I like that he lays out 8 specific tips to break down how to make effective cards. He lists out the steps but doesn't stop there because he will also elaborate on the WHY behind each tip. I also really love that he describes not only how to make flashcards, but how to effectively study them as well. He makes studying seem like a way less daunting task. Overall, I really liked this video because he describes how you can make flashcards that work for YOU and the way YOUR mind processes.

In this video, Thomas explains how to plan out studying for finals so that you are not blindsided when the date arrives. He lists out some guidelines that are important for mental health and sanity when laying out all of the information. He is really good at asking all the big questions you should be asking to help unpack your brain since it is filled with a bunch of questions and unanswered concerns. He describes that you should try and figure out the format and content to be better prepared as an example of how he helps unpack concerns. He is really good at describing how different peoples' brains work and how to start scheduling for each type of person. This makes it very personalized. I often get really overwhelmed when I hear a test or final is coming up and I feel extremely unprepared. His tips helped to give me peace of mind for when finals season rolls around.

I chose this article because it not only covers some of the study tools Thomas lists, but it also describes in depth the best ways to handle different types of content (ex: the article lists that chunking is effective for studying in a textbook). The article is important because it touches on some of the broad topics Thomas explained and it also touches on how to study best for different learning styles.

I chose this article because it reiterates the spacing method of studying Thomas spent a whole video discussing. It also describes how students need to study to succeed because often content is given, but how to break it down is not. Overall, this article is great because it is short, sweet, but also very helpful in describing the best ways to study content.
