Let's Stop Stereotyping the Homeless: Nonfiction Reaction by Ms. G

This is an article I discovered when I was researching a topic connected to my group's story, "The Treasure of Lemon Brown." I decided to look into how homeless people are perceived by our society. This article tells the story of a homeless man in Boston who discovered someone else's treasure and decided to do the right thing. He turned in the treasure to the police and received a reward. The structure of this article is best defined as cause-effect. The homeless man turned in the money that he found which is the cause. The effect of this is that he did the right thing and was honored by the police. After further research I discovered that his effect continues--he is the recipient of a large donation raised by people who heard the story. The effect of his act of kindness is that others are responding with their own kind acts.

My reaction to this article is a blend of being both interested and sad. It seems like homeless people are easily stereotyped as law-breaking and dishonest. In this article, the headline reads, "Homeless Man is Honest." This headline made me think that the author of the article is shocked that a homeless person did the right thing! I think it is good that the man was honored and appreciated for his good deed, but I am uncomfortable with the assumption being that he would probably do the wrong thing. This stereotype sets very low expectations for people who fall into the category of "homeless." It also treats them as though the word "homeless" is the most defining feature they have.

In the story "The Treasure of Lemon Brown," I appreciate how the author treated Lemon Brown as a complete character. Sure, he was homeless, but he had a history, a story, a family, and a talent. He was a rounded character--complete and complex. This was a very respectful way to write about someone who is homeless, and I think that the author really helps debunk stereotypes of homeless people by writing about Lemon Brown in such a respectful way.

I have attached the article below for you to read!

This poem shows how friendships are a

great treasure. This is most realized when

you are lonely and searching for friends. In this

poem, I use imagery to show how sad it is to be

without this treasure. I also use internal conflict.

As the girl searches for friends, you witness her inner

struggle and hope that she discovers the treasure of

friendship. Finally, I developed my resolution to show

how it is possible to find this treasure if you have

confidence.
