To work these plantations settlers brought African slaves and the slaves worked for the plantations. Years later African slaves escaped from the plantations and built there own community and these people are called Maroons. The slaves were a big help with Suriname's independence because they would work the sugar cane factories. If the slaves were not there were no sugar factories being attended.
