The beginning of Turkey's first comprehensive curriculum revision began with the 1997 curriculum, which increased the length of mandatory schooling to eight years with the ultimate purpose of increasing students' exposure to primary education (Güven, 2008). With the exception of tertiary education, the whole educational system was changed by the 1997 curriculum, which also made significant changes to the way foreign languages are taught.

The elementary ELT curriculum was revised in 2005 by a Turkish team of curriculum specialists (MEB 2006). A substantial pedagogical shift was brought about in the classrooms as a result of the curriculum's adoption of global trends by combining other Western-derived educational methodologies. This increased the communicative component of language instruction. By using a "constructivist approach," the 2005 curriculum enables students to learn "nonlanguage cross-curricular disciplines" including geography, music, and sports in English.

In 2012, the old educational system—which included eight years of primary school followed by four years of secondary education—was replaced with the new "4 + 4 + 4" model, in which each four-year term of study is comparable to eight years of primary, elementary, and secondary education. Educational plans must now be updated as a result of this structural shift. This language planning goal led to a reduction in the grade at which English instruction should begin, from grade 4 to the current grade 2. English classes are now longer and use updated materials.

Especially in Ottoman time, English was not even worth mentioning, but in time English gained importance and dominance over other languages throughout the world. I also learned the times when our curriculum changed, how it changed.
