I used these two photos above for my roots project on the far right. The roots have bumps, bends, and odd shapes. For a more realistic look, I added lines with the branches. i focused on the 3-d form and looked at the negative spaces to help with placement. Also, I experimented and worked on pencil strokes to represent the bark. The texture of the trunk is much more pronounced than on the branches as well. I tried to make my piece unique by drawing roots coming out of the grounds that has a human like body figure.

For this project I used acrylic art. It was tough to get shading in, but I was able to add oil pastel to make the shading more refined. I started the project off by using gray, white, and brown acrylic paint to cover the plain, white canvas. I added a lot of brown to the piece to add a realistic and at the same time, abstract look. I feel like I did a great job with proportions in terms of the nose, ears, and mouth. It's an aspect I've worked on over the years.

I used charcoal for this self portrait. I focused on shading techniques and using fingers to spread the charcoal across the paper as a shading technique. I also blended and smoothed the charcoal with a paper stump to get a realistic shading effect. One of the best qualities of charcoal is how it allows you to leave some parts of a drawing unrefined and sketchy while developing other areas more fully. I used this technique for the forehead and the hair to get a darker shade.
