I think I'd like to focus on or feature Filipino MEMES in my padlet. This is because nowadays people spend a lot, I mean A LOT of time on the internet. One of the main mediums you can express your emotions, feelings, passions, gripes, and problems is memes. Memes I believe are one of the if not THE most impactful part of pop culture nowadays, because of how general, accessible, and big its reach is. Memes allow people to view or share their views of the world in a manner that may or may not be indirect even satirically.

Carnival Theory and Memes

I think that the Carnival theory fits memes very well. I do think that the Agenda-setting Theory also partly fits, alongside the Uses and Gratification Theory. I think that the Carnival theory is what fits the most because memes are truly an embodiment of it. The Carnival Theory states or suggests that media can be used or portrayed satirically or sort of in a "carnivalesque" manner. The Carnival Theory also tells us that it involves a sort of anonymity, and it breaks down typical societal barriers like hierarchy or social standing, basically, everyone is equal in the face of jokes or laughter. That is literally what memes are about, it's a way for people to express themselves, their emotions, and their opinions. In memes, it is often like this where in some if not most cases memes are used to anonymously express dissatisfaction, or problems towards a specific entity, event, or group. Memes can talk about personal problems, politics, religion, gender, societal issues, economic issues, and so much more. In this regard, it becomes a way to find like-minded people depending on how they react to it.

Memes and It's Influence

Memes here in the Philippines are very popular, especially among the younger generations. This is not something that is going to disappear anytime soon. Memes have made their way from just social media posts to even national headlines in some cases. Memes in the Philippines range from a vast amount of topics and every day more and more memes are created from many different entities, events, or groups. What can these memes actually achieve? what can they even do? and are they all just jokes? Memes here in the Philippines are used to express reactions, feelings, and opinions about certain matters that occur, these can be either good or bad events. An example is how memes are a way for people to express dissatisfaction with the government without actually and explicitly voicing out their complaints. Reactions to these memes can be seen by people, their creators and viewers can feel a sense of satisfaction or might even be bliss when they realize that there are others out there who agree with their opinions and whatnot. There are also negative ways of using memes, memes can be used to spread false information or opinions/"takes" that may or may not be just flat-out wrong. Freedom of speech and expression play a big part in how memes are created and spread, the thing is that though we are free to say what we want, there should still be limitations, and people tend to forget this and overstep. This is why I think memes are a big part of Philippine Pop Culture, it's the weight of their influence and their accessibility as anyone can make them. I think this is what makes them interesting, there are lots of memes that are created and spread but people often overlook the meanings and often don't realize the weight of its influence in their moods, own opinions, social life, and day-to-day.
