  • The Sabah government hopes that these new efforts will help protect the wilderness, end illegal labor, and improve agriculture practices.
  • Many poor people buy products with palm oil, however, these same people are being employed to help stop poverty in Sabah.
  • Palm originates from Africa, and was introduced to the British in the mid 1800’s. In 2015, this project was launched to make palm more sustainable and help out the environment hoping that other countries might also try the same thing.

  • Clearing of forests in Indonesia to make way for oil palm plantations has reduced in latest years, a new evaluation shows.
  • It observed that deforestation used to be related with 3.1 million hectares (7.7 million acres) of plantations hooked up due to the fact 2000.  
  • This is out of a complete of 16.2 million hectares (40 million acres) planted as of 2019.
  • Auriga, the environmental NGO that carried out the analysis, says this offers the bulk of palm oil producers a case to make that their palm oil is deforestation-free and need to be labeled as sustainable.
  • However, a Greenpeace campaigner says being deforestation-free is solely one thing of sustainability, and provides many oil palm businesses remain a long way from socially sustainable.

    - climate impacts: palm oil replacing rainforests increases the carbon stored in the forest by 61%. Each rainforest converted releases 174 tons of carbon.
