AIUPNA engages in the process of public education critical of its historic and modern role in the colonization and assimilation of Indigenous Peoples and persons of culture. Invasion, genocide, linguicide and deculturalization have been the results of the imposition of dominant cultural and political modes of education across the continent. The solutions for Indigenous Peoples require acknowledgment of these realities with an open-hearted aspiration for a pedagogy of love, hope and power centered upon and strengthened by Indigenous root knowledge and community. Within the school this includes:
-STRONG LEARNER-TEACHER RELATIONSHIPS
-PARENT LEADERSHIP
-COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
-DEDICATED SUPPORT STAFF
-CULTURAL EMPOWERMENT
-LONG-TERM COMMITMENT

(Quote attributed to Sitting Bull, Art by Ernesto Yerena, Graphic Design in-house)

Based upon two decades of this work, AIUPNA has established a partnership with an autonomous learning center in Cuentepec, Morelos, Mexico focused on teaching and learning in Nahuatl. Additionally, AIUPNA is a long-standing member of an indigenous mathematics network which studies and promotes the use of the ancestral math science embodied in the Nepohualtzintzin or math calculator. To date, AIUPNA has helped train and convene over two hundred Nahuatl teachers from across four states in Mexico through these partnerships.

(BELOW: Nahua children/students and parent in Copalillo, Gro., Mexico participants in youth exchange with Anahuacalmecac students, parents and teachers, 2017)

Beginning with a week long summer program in 2018 and a youth exchange involving tribal youth from out of state, this program coordinates access AIUPNA's closest university partner CSULA through faculty engaged from the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department there. During the academic year, Dr. Nora Cisneros and university mentors will provide monthly classes to students on Saturday mornings. The program culminates with the organization of a three-week residential and hybrid summer program uniting Indigenous students from across Los Angeles County with Anahuacalmecac students. This program is designed to support American Indian students and advocate for CSULA to equally support migrant Indigenous students to participate in a unique college pathway program designed to promote learning and cultural spaces where all Indigenous students can feel welcomed and valued, within the university.
