Solving the food waste problem in Ramadan.

Here are some suggestions for reducing food waste during the Holy month of Ramadan. First and foremost, we could make a meal plan; a meal plan can assist us in making the most of the ingredients we already have on hand. Second, we could share or donate leftover food; if we have any overcooked or leftover food, we could consider sharing it with friends and neighbors. Third, we can refrigerate, which means we can store and preserve some foods in the refrigerator or freezer by keeping them cool and preventing them from spoiling.

The trend shows that during Ramadan the demand for beef, lamb, chicken and related meat products increases by approximately % of the normal demand, which in itself is very high. It is similar to the fate of other Parv related food items such as vegetables, fruits, dairy products etc. which are quickly taken off shelves in supermarket and refrigerated stores during special religious occasions. It is both environmentally and ethically offensive that we as a society have become informal about basic raw materials for life. Over the years, society and people have become more wasteful due to rising incomes, standards of living, consumerism and affordability. But agreeing does not mean that the waste should increase because it goes against Islamic principles of sustainability during Ramadan.

You should shop smart ,most people tend to buy more food than they need. To avoid buying more food than you need, make frequent trips to the grocery store every few days rather than doing a big shopping trip once a week. An other way is to Store food, Many people are unsure how to store fruits and vegetables, which can lead to eventually rotten produce. You can also Save left overs, Although many people save food from large meals, it is often forgotten in the fridge, then tossed when it goes bad. Last but not least, Make home made food -by making food at home, you can waste less.

The month of Ramadan is a blessed month for many reasons. Besides performing fasting, Muslims have the opportunity to obtain rewards for other good deeds such as helping others, sharing food with neighbours, maintaining cleanliness, speaking good words and avoiding wastage.

Ramadan also promises various opportunities to gain Allah’s rewards, but unfortunately, some of our poor attitude and habits may spoil the prospect of attaining Allah’s blessings. One of the bad habits is food wasting.

Based on The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SW Corp) data on food waste, the amount of food wasted in Ramadan is 15 to 20 per cent higher than the average month. In 2015, Malaysians produced 15,000 tonnes of food waste daily and 3,000 tonnes were food that was good before it was thrown away. That 3,000 tonnes of food were able to feed 2.2 million people.

The study by SW Corp also found that households generated the highest percentage of food waste (38.4 per cent) compared to wet markets (24.5 per cent), restaurants and dining halls (23.3 per cent) and hotels (6.88 per cent). Thus, households, which refer to families, make up the major contributor of food waste in Malaysia.

The high wastage of food also means that an amount of money has been wasted on buying food. The SW Corp research shows that a household of five spend about RM900 a month for food and a quarter of the food is wasted during preparation, cooking and consumption. The wasted amount of money is about RM225 and in a year, the amount is worth RM2,700. This shows that we have wasted so much food and money which is contrary to the teachings of Islam.

In Islam, there are many verses in the Quran and numerous hadiths on eating and matters associated with it. Food is seen as not only to fulfil one’s need or hunger, but also as something that benefits our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Additionally, food is also something that connects humans to The Creator through the sense of dependency, gratefulness and responsibility.

The phenomenon of wasting food and throwing it in the garbage is widespread during the blessed month of Ramadan, due to extravagance and waste, as a result of the irresponsible behavior of the family and its lack of awareness in managing these foods in a proper manner, despite the presence of many ways that contribute to not wasting these foods and benefiting from them.

Today, we show you the steps that will avoid wasting food during the holy month of Ramadan:

1. Preparing food in appropriate quantities: If the number of people at the dining table is six, the quantities of food served on the table should not exceed their needs.

2. Purchasing locally produced food; Because importing food and transporting it across countries causes the chances of it spoiling quickly through global transportation.

3. Plan meals by keeping the necessary items in one place such as the food cupboard and the refrigerator; It is easy to prepare a list of purchases and adhere to them. This step not only reduces the amount of leftovers but also saves time and money.

4. Be sure to know the expiration dates of foodstuffs by paying attention to reading the “production date” and the “expiration period” date.

5. Make a list of purchases before you go shopping, and avoid shopping when you are hungry; Because this case leads to random purchase.

6. Take advantage of food leftovers by browsing the Internet and searching for new ideas to deal with excess food leftovers to prepare distinctive and delicious dishes.

7. Use the purchased product to the maximum extent possible by specifying the types of food that can be frozen, stored or dried, which contributes to avoiding food waste.

8. Avoid filling the plate with food: At parties or gatherings, avoid overfilling your plate when choosing food from the open buffet, and thus avoiding food waste.

9. Providing surplus food to people in need instead of throwing it in the garbage, taking care to ensure the safety and validity of food before donating it.

This and the huge amount of food wasted has produced an urgent need to tackle the problem, rethink and consider new models and build a smarter system in different cities by recycling these foods and using them again in ways that help feed the poor and hungry around the world.

Is waste treatment the only thing that will contribute to solving the problem of food waste?

Of course not. Awareness is considered half the cure, meaning that educating people about the importance of food and changing the way they perceive it will actually contribute to treating this problem.

Working on this issue in both directions (awareness and treatment of waste food) will in turn reduce the need for countries to import foodstuffs, as Vincent indicated that the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman import more than 90% of their food needs, thus treating waste food. It will reduce the amount of imported food and thus reduce these costs!

Steps to solve the problem of food waste in Ramadan

So the important steps to solve this problem are:

Working to change the human view of the subject of Ramadan food. Increasing the awareness of different communities about the issue of food waste. Enacting strong legislation in this regard. Strengthening the concept and principle of Ramadan food recycling. Communities’ participation in solving and treating the problem.

With this, Dubai Municipality confirmed that there is a great responsibility that falls on the shoulders of the clergy, especially in the month of Ramadan, as they are able to spread awareness and change in this regard, by quoting verses from the Holy Qur’an that support this and affect the souls of the fasting people.

Although the holy month of Ramadan is the month of piety, righteousness, charity, mercy, forgiveness and contentment, many Muslims increase their extravagance and extravagance in this month, unlike the rest of the months of the year, as they exaggerate in buying what is delicious and delicious of food, drink, sweets and entertainment, as if Ramadan is a season for eating and showing off, so they eat a little of it. The rest is subjected to destruction and throwing into garbage containers... at a time when many Muslim families suffer from hunger and poverty, and find no one to sympathize with them and feed them!

Extravagance in Ramadan is not limited to well-to-do families only, but includes - unfortunately - the majority of families from different classes and groups, rich and poor - especially in Ramadan feasts and celebrations in which bragging is the master of the situation - and extravagance also extended to breaking the fast in some mosques, when There is no coordination with the imam of the mosque or the person in charge of the iftar program, as each person brings his best food, dates and juices, which exceeds the needs of those who break their fast in the mosque, and some of them may not be easy to carry or transport and are thrown and destroyed!

There are some steps that can be taken to treat the phenomenon of extravagance in Ramadan, including:

First: We must all be aware and understand well what is meant by Ramadan fasting, which is a purification for the soul, money and society. It is also true worship and training in patience, jihad, sacrifice and hardship. Ramadan is not a month for holding feasts, parties, and competing in pleasures and entertainment.

Second: Accountability and self-monitoring before and during spending and consumption, and contemplation and reflection on the consequences of extravagance, extravagance and luxury.. Whoever suffers a difficult account in this world, it will be easy for him in the hereafter, and in this regard Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, says: Your deeds before they are weighed upon you, and prepare for the greatest show.” The Muslim must also remember the poor, the needy, and the mujahideen and stand before God for the accountability in the hereafter, not only in Ramadan, but at all times; Constant accountability and self-monitoring make the fasting Muslim individual firm with himself, curbing her whims and weaning her from her desires and demands, and making her walk the path of Islam.
