Monsoon, meaning season, is a change in direction of the strongest winds in a region. Monsoons tend to blow from cold regions like the Indian Ocean to warm regions like Southeast Asia. They cause wet and dry seasons throughout the tropics and originate from the Indian Ocean. Monsoons occur both in the winter and the summer months. The winter monsoon pushes cool, dry air, south, towards the tropics causing a dry winter and the summer monsoon (May and June) pushes high pressure air over the Pacific Ocean, north, towards low pressure air on land (Asia) causing a wet summer.

The summer monsoon tends to happen between the months of April and September or just after the cool winter months turn into warm summer days. As winter ends, warm, moist air from the southwest Indian Ocean flows towards countries like East India, South China, North Australia, West New Guinea, combined known as Southeast Asia. This results in humid temperatures and heavy rainfall to these countries.

India and Southeast Asia rely on summer monsoon‘s for their agriculture as many areas in Southeast Asia don’t have bodies of water such as; lakes, rivers, etc. The summer monsoon fills the wells and aquifers for the entire year. They also rely on the summer monsoon as a large amount of electricity in those regions is produced by hydroelectric power plants. In order too power these plants a large amount of water is needed.

Residence expect almost a half a meter filling their streets every summer, its what their use to and its what the buildings can handle. Although, when the summer monsoon is stronger than expected, floods can demolish the region. In cities like Mumbai, neighborhoods can be drowned reaching the highest record of 50-80ft of water in 1997. In rural areas, mudslides can bury villages and destroy crops.

During winter the ground temperature is cooler than sea temperature. This results in the density and pressure of the air over the cold Asian continent to be much higher. As a result of this, a mass of cold dry air blows out from land to the ocean surface. This dry air will only absorb water vapor until it reaches the ocean surface far from land. A monsoon is most powerful in Southeast Asia because the Asian Continent is the world's largest land-mass and Southeast Asia is just off the ocean water making them its first target.

The severity of the monsoon depends on the country’s distance to the equator, to the ocean, and the existence or nonexistence of mountains within the area.
