My Story-Social Model of Disability

At the present time of Covid19 pandemic, we are not having any
face to face meetings. Hence I am going to describe a meeting we
had some time ago. In this meeting we were discussing the Social
Model of Disability as opposed to the Medical model. One of the
main purpose of our organisation is to support disabled people to
live independently in the community. A medical model of disability
rests on assumption of what disabled persons can't do because of
their impairment . For example he or she cannot walk, therefore he or she will never be able to work.A medical model will then focus on
trying to help the individual to walk again through operations etc. On the other hand the Social model of disability holds that people with
impairments '' are disabled'' by the barriers operating in the society
that exclude and discriminate against them. To illustrate this concept, I presented two infographics which I have attached herewith. After seeing these infographics people asked if I can narrate a ''Real Life Story'' to explain this better. Hence I described a real story that I had encountered during my professional career as a GP. Here it is I am describing again.
One of my patient who had problem with his knee asked for a
handrail to be fitted at his front door so that he can stand there
holding the rail and talk to his neighbour. This initiated a visit by a
occupational therapist who recommended that the patient be
referred to the orthopedic surgeon for treatment of his knee problem. He ended up getting a knee
replacement .A few months later this patient was very angry and this is what he said exactly in his ownwords.
'' I am still unable to stand at my front door to talk to my neighbour.
All that I wanted was a handrail and got a bloody knee replacement
instead.I still do not have my handrail.''
Everyone in the audience appreciated that I made my point very
well with this story.
