Diversity in Children’s Literature by Jennifer Roll

Identify a children's book about families. You may choose to complete your initial search using the Delaware Library catalog, Good Reads, or other websites. When possible, take the time to read or view the title. Many books are read aloud on YouTube, public library websites (e.g., Indianapolis Public Library), and other resources.

Please include the title, author &/or illustrator of the book, the diversity factor(s) of the story, what age groups you would read this title to, and why you like it. Finally, please include either an image or the book cover or a video link to a read-aloud of the title.

Our goal is ten different books about families, so take a look at our Padlet notebook page. Consider a book about an aspect of diversity that you are curious about or related to your own family.

My Hair was written by Hannah Lee and illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan. This is a story about a young girl that is deciding on a hair style for a special family event. She considers her family members preferences of hair stylings. The descriptive rhyming language throughout is supported by the bright and colorful illustrations that highlight the hair but also individual dress and accessories.

The obvious diversity factor is black and African American hair styling but also the different ages of the family members. I would read this with children ages 2 and up. The styles of hair but also the emotions described throughout the story are awesome. This is a video of the author, Hannah Lee, reading her book. Enjoy!

And Tango Makes Three By Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, Illustrated by Henry Cole

The book "And Tango Makes Three" by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell was based on the true story of Roy and Silo. Roy and Silo are two male chinstrap penguins who formed a pair bond in New York's Central Park Zoo. And with the help of a kindly zookeeper, Roy and Silo got the chance to welcome a baby penguin of their very own.

And Tango Makes Three discusses culture war debates on same-sex marriage and adoption. I would read this book to any children after the age of three. I like this book because it talks about same-sex marriage and adoption. Some children do not truly know a lot about these topics so going over this book can help them open their minds.

The book shows that love makes a family no matter if you have two parents or one, or one dad or two. I like the book, because I think it's important to teach children that every family is different and that doesn't change a thing. Each family has love even though they may be different. I would read this book to preschoolers.

My Family, Your Family by Lisa Bullard, Illustrated by Renee Kurilla.
Age group: K-5

"My family, your family" is a story about a young girl named Makayla who is visiting all of the families in her neighborhood and recalling what she sees as she goes. Makayla starts to realize that every family is different in their own way, and not that not every family is made up of a mother and father. Some of the families in her neighborhood have lots of children, but others have none. Some of her friends with their grandparents, have two dads, or have have parents that are divorced.

The diversity in this book is absolutely amazing, and I think it does a great job of truly showing the difference in all types of families. By including families that are made up of grandparents, two dads, and even divorced parents, it shows children that every family is different in their own way and to never be ashamed if theirs doesn't look the same as those around them!

"We Are All Alike, We Are All Different" is written and illustrated by Cheltenham Elementary School

This book really stood out to me because if you can see on the cover, there are all different colored humans. With each of them being different, it fits right in with the title of the book. This book is good for kindergarten and 1st grade. It is about all people on this earth is the same. Most of all can walk, talk, eat, sleep, and learn. But we can also be different. We have blacks, hispanics, whites, guatemalans, and more. All of us being birthed is the same but can be in different ways. It makes kids understand the same things we both like or even want, but still stands out that we all have our differences.

Who's In My Family was written by Robie H. Harris and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Wescott. This book is ideal for children aged 3 - 6 years.

In this story, we follow along with two siblings named Nellie and Gus as they go to the zoo and discuss all the different kinds of families there are. Nellie and Gus share how there are so many different kinds of families, such as families with two mommies and some families with step-parents. Nellie and Gus even share how different families eat different meals different from their family, such as some families eat bacon and eggs for breakfast while other families may eat shrimp and rice. Nellie and Gus even point out that some families have members with different colored skin and eyes, and that Nellie has darker skin than Gus but they both have brown eyes. However, at the end of the day Nellie and Gus state that all families love and take care of each other even with all of their differences.

I personally really enjoyed this story on different families. This story truly shares all the different types and forms that families come in. This would be a very good story to share with children to help them understand that even though another family physically looks different from their own, that family still loves each other the exact same as their own family.

Same Same But Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw is about two young boys who become pen-pals,from America and India. In their discovery of one another they unveil many parts of themselves and their life. In many instances, although perhaps slightly different, they are very close to the same.

They utilize the saying,"Same Same but Different" to convey the diversity factors throughout the story. This story shows the understanding of diversity that we may vary in different aspects, including race, family dynamic, and more, but ultimately there are many of the same qualities to life that play a role in who we are.

I would choose to read this book to children in grades Pre-K to 2nd grade, as the conversations can become more complex as time passes and knowledge is gained.
I chose this story because I enjoyed its approach to understanding diversity yet one in the same. On each page the boys reveal a part of themselves that makes them, and in doing so they realize that they are very similar. I think this is a beautiful understanding for children to have as they navigate their social development, that we are all really the same, in different ways. The books is a quick book explaining humans and animals. The way we eat is the same, and we can all drink; it may just be in different ways. About how some people can be bigger than animals, and others can be quite smaller. It is a great way to explain to a young child that everyone’s blood runs the same. We can all do the same thing it just may not be normal to us. Elephants drink from their nose, we do not, but we both drink. I like this book because it keeps the imagination flowing.

First Laugh Welcome Baby! is a book centered around the first laugh ceremony in Navajo Native American families. The story starts prior to the baby's first laugh and goes through many aspects of Navajo culture on its way to the baby laughing. It shows different family members doing things like sister making cornmeal mush, mom making a tree of life rug, riding with grandmother across a mesa in the desert, etc. Different family members each take their go at making the baby laugh throughout the story as it is a great honor to be the first to make a baby laugh in Navajo culture. (In tradition, it is believed that the first time a Navajo baby laughs, the child is transcending their spiritual existence and is ready to live with their family in the physical world.) I would read this book to kids from ages 3 and up. I like this book because I think this ceremony is really cool and expresses a lot about Navajo culture.

Frybread: A Native American Family story that explains how Frybread connects all Indigenous people and the origin of how frybread came to be. When the Indigenous people were pushed off of their lands and given small rations of food and resources, they created the Native dish named "frybread" it is a main part of many Native household diets. In modern day, Frybread is still a dish that connects all Indigenous tribes. This book is very important to me because I am an Indigenous person and my family enjoys eating frybread on a regular occasion. I read this book to my 10 month old nephew when I see him and I plan on continuing to do so as he gets older. In the classroom, I would read this to preschoolers and up because it gives an amazing insight on Native history.

All Hair is Good Hair by Annajid Kee Taylor, illustrated by Princess Karibo, tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who struggles to love her natural hair as she believes she has “bad hair.” She expresses her insecurity with her mother. Samaya’s mother is determined to instill self-love and influence her by what she says and does. Samaya reveals the events that led her to acknowledge that all hair is good hair.

Living in a culture saturated with digitally altered photos and videos and perfect bodies, raising females with high self-esteem seems scary. Black/African American females have difficulty loving their natural hair because all curl patterns differ. Our hair is not naturally straight. I bought this book for my ten-year-old sister. My sister has sister locks, and her peers teased her in school about them. As a result, she attempted to cut them out. Fast forward, she loves her locks and embraces them.

I would read this book to children 5 and up.

What We Wear Around the World by Book by Cynthia Pon, Elise Hofer Derstine, and Maya Ajmera is a book about the different diversity in clothing that is worn by different cultures. It even tell why certain outfits are worn by that culture. I thought this was a great book to choose for a topic on diversity because not only does it show different cultures for diversity but it also shows the diversity in clothing and style. Diversity doesn't just stand just for different colors of people but also clothing, hair style/type, and even food as well. It shows that everyone has culture, everyone is different, and its a beautiful thing.
This is a book that I curranty read to my class of preschoolers. I think this book would also be great for kindergarten through second as well. Sometimes small children don't like if other peers are not interested in similar things as them, so by reading this book to them, showing them all the different cultures and their styles it will help broaden their minds. Helping them realize liking different things and being different is ok. And even possibly helping them find interest in something new too.

Our Diversity Makes Us Stronger written by Elizabeth Cole, does a very nice job of showing all of the differences a person can have. This book includes illustrations of children of different races and ethnicities as well as explains certain differences each child has. This book ensures the reader that it is okay to be different and that you should be proud of what makes you unique. I like this book because it also includes children with disabilities in it and there aren't a lot of books that I've seen illustrate this. I also like that the book says that people can be different by the way they feel and handle situations not just by the way they look. I would read this book to children of ages 5-8 because it has some bigger words this age range would more likely understand.

Diversity Factor(s): This story goes through each different aspect of a family and/or their families. Some children speak different languages, some children dress alike or differently, some children are raised with different family members, with or without siblings. The book allows children to connect with each other or to see how other people live their life differently than them.

Age groups I would read this story to: The author suggested reading the book to those between 6-10 years old because of the long content and coverage.

Why I like it: I like this book because it does pertain to some parts of my life: I have straight hair, I live with my mom, I have some freckles and light skin...but it also goes over things that I haven't experienced or what I don't like: I don't have a goldfish, I don't have a twin, I don't like math, I cannot speak any other language other than English and a little bit of Sign Language...We are all different, but our differences can also be the same.

One day, a mother duck who has three eggs almost ready to hatch in her nest. When mother duck was looking, a larger egg came rolling down a big hill and landed in her nest. Once the eggs all hatched, mother duckling had three little baby ducks, and one baby crocodile. She taught all her baby how to swim, dive, and look for food. Mother duck loved all of her babies the same no matter how fast one learned or how different one looked from each other. When the family was sitting near the lake, three big bad crocodiles came to see baby crocodile. They wanted him to bring his family of ducks to the lake under the bridge for them to eat! Baby crocodile thought about what the big bad crocodiles had told him about how he is just like them. Baby crocodile came up with a plan to stop these mean crocodiles from eating his family.

The diversity of this story is explaining that everyone in a family is loved no matter what you look like, how you act, what you can or can not do. Being a family means loving each other no matter what and that is the lesson that is being showed to children in this young age group of K to 1st grade.

The book describes all of the varying aspects there are in families in regards to their size or color, likes and dislikes. In addition to describing some of these aspects of families, the book also goes into normalizing not-so-stereo-typical families and projects the message that although not all families are the same, they can be just as good. despite these differences among us, we can all still learn what a family is and what is means.

I personally like this story because it shows children from a very early age, that although we may look different, act different, have different tastes and preferences, we can still be a family. Also, the author/illustrator is the author of one of my favorite TV shows as a kid.

The age group I think would be appropriate for me to read this too would be children 2-4.

"All People Are Beautiful" was written by Vincent Kelly and illustrated by Cha Consul. This book is ideal for ages 4 to 8.

The book is so special in many ways. This book teaches children that we are different in our own unique ways. It teaches children that people come in all shapes and sizes, and yes colors too, and to different activities different people enjoy, expanding to differences based on country of origin and languages spoken. As we know children recognize differences from a very early age. this book will introduce many multicultural differences, highlighting why they make us unique. It also teaches acceptance and belonging, and how to feel comfortable with our skin color. I really like this book and how it's put together. Children will enjoy this book and will be able to learn how all people are beautiful.
