Providence Rhode Island served as the basis and setting for most of Lovecraft's body of work. Within the drab grey of the New England landscape he created cities and towns the very names of which, such as Arkham would become synonymous with madness in later fiction.

Lovecraftian Horror

Cosmic or Lovecraftian horror is the main hallmark and legacy of the troubled author. The subject attempts to tackle nor the horror of what could be or the darkest depth of the human mind, but instead focus on the unknown and the unknowable.

The horror comes from the fact that control and comfort is so fundamentally torn from the hands of humanity at large and the reader in particular.

What Lovecraft created in the eyes of many had no right to exist and some modern critics have even suggested re-writing his work entirely, but much like the creatures from his novels the novels themselves refuse to die, their ideas are as insidious as the madness described within.

The dead-born ideas of the man who lived over a century ago hold sway over most science fiction and horror to this day and most likely will long after the memory of the man who started it all will fade.
