Her life turns around when a tragic accident happens to her father. Esperanza is forced to move to California and work on a cotton farm. She overhears s conversation between a few women and discovers they are protesting a strike. Esperanza worries if her family will have enough money and thrive. When all the protesters are arrested, Esperanza wonders how her life turned from riches to rags, and if this move was for the better.
