The life span theory address all the fundamental questions of development, such as which adult characteristics are continuous with previous traits and propensities versus how much change there is in adult behavior.
Life span development defines development as a process of adapting to the constant flux of influences in our lives. There are three types of adaptions. First is growth, which happens when we add new characteristics, understandings, and skills. The second is maintenance, which is finding new ways to continue functioning at the same level in the face of a challenge. Third is regulation, which is reorganizing the way we behave.

Ego identity is the sense of identity that provides individuals with the ability to experience their sense of who they are, and also act on that sense, in a way that has continuity and sameness. The most influential theorist in this area, Erikson (1968) described ego identity as a means for continuity of the person. Erikson describe three stages of self-development in adulthood, which are (intimacy vs isolation) in young adulthood, (generativity vs stagnation) in middle adulthood, and (ego integrity vs despair) in late adulthood. Each of the stages describes where individuals stand during that period of time.

Family life cycle is a normative, stagelike sequence of traditional family development in intact marriages. With that being said, once the members of the couple make a commitment to each other they begin to develop a new martial or relationship system that is a creative synthesis of the couples original family's system. From that, the couple may become parents which reaches a new stage of the family life cycle. After children, the couple must deal with the transition of launching their children and renegotiation the marital relationship.

Self determination theory represents a broad framework for the study of human motivation and personality. his theory focuses on how social and cultural factors facilitate or undermine people’s sense of volition and initiative, in addition to their well-being and the quality of their performance. Researchers suggest that ones life satisfaction is derived from the fulfillment of fundamental psychological needs for Autonomy; which is feelings ones owns behaviors, Competence; which is expressing ones talent and skills, and Relatedness; which is having the opportunity to be cared for by others.

Sternberg's (1986 ,2006) view on love, which is composed of three parts, passion, intimacy, and commitment sets a basis of how the family life cycle begins. Without having any of the three parts then the cycle can not move on to the next stage. With that being said, his theory about love is important when it comes to dealing with the life cycle.
Erikson's (1950/1963) three stages of self development hold an important view when it comes to ego idenifty. Going through the different stages sets an indidvual up for their following stage. So with that being said, if an indidcual did not get to complete the stages in full then the next stage will not go so well either.
Overall, understanding these perspectives while counseling will help me be able to guide a individual in the right direction. I would be able to provide the proper services, and suggestions for each client.
