Define and evaluate the concept of closeness (Ratliff, Ch. 14) as an important musical element across all kinds of music. Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element?

after reading ratliffs chapter on closeness it seems to me that clossness is the unison in a piece wether it be two instruments or in a song or two musical instruments. Ratliff in his chapter describes it is " In singing or in playing, it gives the listener a secure, jacketed feeling". This musical element in all types of music is in a way smoothness and how the music flows, its the comfortability of the song to a listeners ears. i dont agree with ratliffs arguments. Frankly im not sure closeness is the right term for this musical element. he explains it as may things but they have no relation to the word closeness. personaly i think the musical element should be called flow or comfortability, I say this because the way he talks about this element is two musicians in the purest condition to sort of drown out the rest of the other elements

the musical example i chose from ratliff's playlist is "help ,im a rock" - Frank Zappa. the reason i chose this musical example is because it displays the way he talks about closenss comparing it to another band " he describes it as “Phillips gives you the sound of heroic attention. He makes you realize that someone is animating these songs with constant thought.” and to me this song that i chose perfectly displays what hes trying to convey

the musical that i chose outside of ratliffs playlist that exemplifies this musical element is "house of the rising son - The Animals the reason i chose this is because it give the feeling of the two musical elements working together in harmony to create a comfortable feeling to listening to the song. nothing is overpowering each other its in harmony and sync to perfectly fit the way ratliff describes closeness. '“ the closeness in the track runs between Phillips’s drum and Reed’s guitar, hands, and voice. ”
