Central Station
Foreshadowing of the land making Kurtz crazy. Also emphasizing that colonization is bad since the land itself is evil and dangerous.
"the sunlit face of the land a
treacherous appeal to the lurking death, to the hidden
evil, to the profound darkness of its heart". The setting of the book--the land of Africa, its river and jungle--becomes one of the most important characters, it changes people, seemingly creates danger and is threatening. This all goes to help the point Conrad was trying to make when writing this book: Colonization is bad, even the land itself is evil/fighting us off.

Outer Station
This is Marlow's first introduction and impression upon the people in the Congo. Once arriving he feels an ominous feeling in the atmosphere but continues to pursue his main goal. He gets his first share of what is yet to come in his adventure through a conversation with a doctor within the station. "He was an unshaven little man in a threadbare
coat like a gaberdine, with his feet in slippers, and I thought
him a harmless fool. ‘I always ask leave, in the interests of
science, to measure the crania of those going out there,’ he
said. ‘And when they come back, too?’ I asked. ‘Oh, I never
see them,’ he remarked; ‘and, moreover, the changes take
place inside, you know.’ He smiled, as if at some quiet joke." This casts a little bit of foreshadowing about the dangers and intense conditions the Congo brings upon its adventurers.

Inner Station: Kurtz, the Heart of the Darkness.
"A long decaying building on the summit was
half buried in the high grass; the large holes in the
peaked roof gaped black from afar; the jungle and
the woods made a background. There was no inclosure
or fence of any kind; but there had been one apparently".
The forest has destroyed is swallowing up the attempt to civilize it. The destroyed station, the mysterious dangerous forest where tribes hide to attack, even the weather and river being dangerous for the colonizers conveys Conrad's point of colonization being useless.
"The point was in his being a gifted creature, and
that of all his gifts the one that stood out pre-
eminently, that carried with it a sense of real presence,
was his ability to talk, his words--the gift of expression,
the bewildering, the illuminating, the most exalted and
the most contemptible, the pulsating stream of light, or
the deceitful flow from the heart of an impenetrable
darkness."
Despite all that Kurtz has done, the land of Africa is too dark to be changed, and it ends up changing and killing Kurtz.

Thames River Mouth
Narrative start of the story: London is used to juxtapose the journey into the Congo. The way the river and city are described are very different than that in the Congo. If you were to move up the Thames river you encounter more civilization, whereas farther up the Congo river, less civilization and the people are described as savages, like they are "moving back in time" by going up the Congo river. The Congo river is also described as dark, and is seen as dangerous as Marlow tries to not wreck his boat, but the Thames is described differently: "light came out of this river...but darkness was here yesterday". The juxtaposition of the two rivers shows Conrad's opinion about how uncivilized Africa is.
